TBM Makes 2nd Breakthrough at Delhi Metro’s Greater Kailash Station

Another one complete! 😀

Yesterday afternoon, the S890 Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operated by the Pratibha-FEMC team made a final breakthrough for the CC-23 project of Delhi Metro’s Phase 3 at the Greater Kailash station! This EPBM TBM was commissioned from the Chirag Delhi station on February 11 2016 and completed building the 545m long down-line tunnel of the new 38.235 km Magenta line which will connect Janakpuri West with Noida’s Botanical Garden by mid 2017. This was the 2nd breakthrough recorded here, with the 1st breakthrough taking place for the up-line tunnel a month ago.

With this breakthrough out of the way, all twin tunnels between Kalkaji – Munirka (9 km) are now complete! Now only 3 more TBM breakthroughs are left for all tunneling works to be wrapped up on the Magenta Line:

Contract Contractor Origin Destination Tunnel
CC-27 L&T – SUCG Shankar Vihar Aravali Mid-Shaft Down-line
CC-27 L&T – SUCG Vasant Vihar RK Puram Mid-Shaft Up-line
CC-27 L&T – SUCG Vasant Vihar Munirka Down-line

As I mentioned towards the top of the post, this was the final breakthrough for project CC-23 which spans between Kalkaji – Nehru Enclave – Greater Kailash – Chirag Delhi – Panchsheel Park – Hauz Khas. A total of 10 breakthroughs were recorded and I’ve managed to track 8 of them since starting this initiative in July 2015. The 2 others between Nehru Enclave & Kalkaji took place in late 2014. Tunneling works are complete. They’re working on covering up the shafts and building the entrance/exit structures. Station detailing works & track work are in advanced stage. Trial runs are supposed to begin in July.
