Piling Starts for all 7 TBM Launch Shafts of Mumbai Metro’s Line-3

Construction on Mumbai Metro’s 33.5 km underground Line-3 project has picked up this month with secant piling work for Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) launch shafts now taking place at all 7 packages of the line.

Since the construction of underground stations is time consuming, these 7 launch shafts – one per package and generally 25m long x 25 m wide, are being constructed adjacent to one station of each package so that TBMs can be lowered into them for building the line’s twin tunnels.

Want to see what the shafts will end up looking like? Check out Lucknow Metro’s recently completed Bapu Bhawan Shaft where TBM S52 was lowered into last week. Coming back to Mumbai, the 7 shafts are expected to get ready, one after the other, in Q3 2017 after which tunneling works by TBMs (see a preliminary of 17 TBMs) will commence in Q4 2017.

      Tunneling plan hasn’t been revealed, but you can easily guess some of the 1st destinations:

      UGC 1 – Cuffe Parade -> Vidhan Sabha (confirmed)
      UGC 2 – CST -> Kalbadevi (confirmed)
      UGC 3 – Science Museum -> Mahalaxmi (?)
      UGC 4 – Dharavi -> Shitladevi (?)
      UGC 5 – Vidyanagari -> Santa Cruz (?)
      UGC 6 – Sahar Road -> Terminal 2 (?)
      UGC 7 – Marol Naka -> MIDC (?)

    Information provided for UGC 03 is not correct. The first drive is expected from Science museum towards Acharya Are Chowk station, not Mahalaxmi.

      MMRCL hasn’t revealed that, but I do know the locations for a handful. Which ones do you want to know about?

        MIDC, because just heard that it will come up at the old police quarters which have been demolished for the same, however wondering why the station will be so in from the central road. I also heard that they have started digging outside road 12, which makes more sense to have the station there as it is on the central road.

    Hii. I’m a 4th year architecture student from Mumbai . I have always been very interested in the govt. infrastructural projects like bridges, road construction, metros etc. I wanted to ask you how can an architect participate in such projects specially in India where engineers are given more priority in terms of everything than architects. Also I always wished to participate in such large scale projects, but never got an opportunity to become a part of it in any way. I know it’s too much to ask for but is there any way you could help me with it or maybe just suggest few manner in which I could be handy and helpful.

    Mr TMRG,

    Mumbai Metro 3 line ,33.5 kms, totally underground with 25 + stations, is probably will be longest Underground Metro line in India.
    The project owner is claiming completion by 2020,which if achieved will be a feat !.
    Even in Delhi Metro the First and Second phase total under ground construction is smaller than proposed in MM3.
    The DMRC phase 3, if I recall , is about 56 Kms or so. ( in multiple stretches )
    Do you have data on DMRC phase 3 underground construction time lines, that probably will help to estimate the time required for MM3 completions.
    Mumbai residents will have to face the traffic snarls till then, specially when Station work by ‘ Cut and Cover’ will start !
    Your inputs will help to estimate realistic time lines !!

      Hi, the Phase 3 project is 160 kms long of which about 53.8km is underground. Contracts were awarded between Dec 2011 – November 2012, and if you check the Delhi section, you’ll see that all tunneling activity was recently concluded. Now only interior finishing and sub-system installation work is pending with the lines expected to open later this year and in 2018. Each project’s challenges & conditions are unique, but this should hopefully give a rough timeframe.
