Sam India Awarded Mumbai Metro’s Aarey Depot & Station Contract

In late June, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) awarded Sam (India) Builtwell Pvt. Ltd with a Rs. 328 crore contract to construct the 33.5 km Line-3’s contentious Aarey Depot and Aarey Station on a 25 hectare land parcel in Parajapur village of Aarey Colony.

This is the last civil package of Line-3 to be awarded (rest 7 were finalized in July 2016) and includes the only at-grade (ground level) station of the underground line and an Operations Control Centre (OCC) from where all operations will be monitored and managed.

MMRCL invited bids for this package in January 2017 and estimated it to cost Rs. 340.34 crores. Besides Sam India, Relcon Infraprojects and Ahluwalia Contracts were the two bidders who submitted bids.

Various citizen groups and “nature lovers” have fiercely opposed the depot’s location at Aarey Colony, but the MMRCL is going ahead with the project which will affect 3,130 trees. As per MMRCL’s Director (Projects), Mr. S. K. Gupta –

We are pleased to award civil work contract for Aarey car depot construction. The contractor is mobilizing the equipments and workforce; and civil work is expected to commence soon. We have done a survey and 3,130 trees will be affected. Now, how many will be cut and how many will be transplanted, is subject to approval from the Tree Authority

Sam India Builtwell has previous experience in constructing depots in Delhi (Mundka), Lucknow (Transport Nagar) and is currently constructing Noida Metro’s 30 km Aqua Line to Greater Noida in a joint venture with Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC). Just last month, they also emerged as the lowest bidder for constructing Lucknow Metro’s Amausi – CCS Airport underground tunnel section.
