Nagpur Metro Receives 1st Leased Train from Hyderabad Metro

Nagpur Metro yesterday afternoon welcomed its first 3-coach trainset, leased from Hyderabad Metro for a period of 3 years, at Line-1’s Khapri Depot amidst the beats of festive dhol. The train’s coaches were dispatched from Hyderabad Metro’s Miyapur Depot on the morning of July 28 and traveled roughly 490 kms through rural Telangana and Maharashtra. The coaches are planned to be offloaded today on the depot’s delivery line and will first undergo a preliminary round of visual checks followed by static tests and then dynamic tests on the test line.

In October 2016, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) awarded CRRC with a Rs. 851 crore contract to supply 69 coaches (23 trains x 3 coaches), but with deliveries expected to commence only towards the end of 2018, the MahaMetro’s MD in January 2017 announced an ambitious stopgap plan to lease 2 Hyundai Rotem train-sets from Hyderabad’s fleet of 57 trains which lie underutilized. Later this month, MahaMetro plans to use those trains to begin testing on a 5.6 km sparsely populated at-grade section of the 19.658 km north-south line between Khapri and Airport stations.
