BEML’s 3rd Metro Coach Manufacturing Line Inaugurated

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on August 26 inaugurated a third manufacturing line at BEML’s facility in Bengaluru to ramp up the production of metro coaches to fulfill existing and new orders from Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore metros.

As per BEML’s press release, this new line will enable the company, a public sector undertaking of the Government of India under the Ministry of Defence, to increase its production capacity from 18 to 27 coaches per month by “augmenting the jigs, fixtures & machines while ensuring highest quality standards associated with manufacture of Metro Cars”.

No further details on the amount of investment or the production area have been released.

• Delhi Metro – 96 coaches (RS-13 for Blue & Red lines) – 72 have been delivered
• Kolkata Metro – 84 coaches (Line-2) – 1st new train-set expected to be delivered in October 2017

Signalling tests are still ongoing – there’s no clarity on when they’ll be finished for this section. Civil work is pending at Janakpuri to connect it up with the Blue Line.

In the first Image. there is a new coach for delhi metro. But the coach design is the same as supplied by Hyundai Rotem at the start of Delhi Metro in 2002. Why are the old design coaches being supplied now by BEML to DMRC. On which line will DMRC use these.

Please give the update about proposed extension of EW metro to Santragachi bus terminus. RITES was doing feasibility study but after that nothing came out.

If I’m not mistaken, RITES was also supposed to prepare its DPR. If true, then it’ll take some time for info to come out including the next steps necessary to get work started.

Sooner the better. Santragachi is growing like bubble, awaiting to burst. Metro is badly needed.

That line requires the MH govt’s cabinet approval, before any kind of pre-construction activity (bidding, geo-technical investigation) can begin.
