2nd ICF Medha Train-Set Arrives for Kolkata Metro

Kolkata Metro’s second Medha train-set built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai rolled into the city’s Noapara Depot on September 5. This is the last prototype to be developed by ICF which expects ‘Metro Railway Kolkata’, the operator of Kolkata Metro’s 28 km Line-1, to place an order for 20 such train-sets in the near future.

The first train-set was unveiled on July 4 and arrived in the city on July 16. The train is said to be technologically on par with other metro trains around the country, but costs only Rs. 5 crores per coach – roughly 40%-60% cheaper than others. A list of features and a bunch of images can be viewed here.

Both new train-sets will enter service sometime in October, purposely after the Durga Puja rush ends on September 30, after getting cleared by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

Why Kolkata Metro is giving contract ICF for the Metro Trains. ICF Metro trains are not at all good lookwise and performance wise. There are other companies like Bombardier, Alsthom, BEML who build better Metro rakes, and that’s why Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Kochi, Mumbai and Lucknow are using them. Why Kolkata always get inferior products. And also the Metro construction is slow compared to other Indian cities.

        You are absolutely correct Rakesh.
Very slow process. Services are not good too, compare to other Indian cities.
In 10 years they have just given some rakes which is also not so good compare to Delhi.
I am living in Kolkata since 25 Years but I did not see any progress in metro due to whatever reason I don’t care.
Badi Badi baatein ye bana rahe hai wo bana rahe yahan se wahan bana rahe h. BAS BANA HI RAHE HAI. Aur dusri cities bana kar ready hokar chalne bhi lagi aur nayi bhi start hone par aai.
        But Kolkata is still there.

Kochi , Lucknow and Jaipur are such small cities. They completed the Metro in 40 Months with Services running, And their Metro Trains look better than Kolkata. And Kolkata is called Metropolitan city, but now Kolkata is worst performer in terms of jobs, no multinational companies other than age old TCS, CTS & IBM , but you cannot work there because of too much office politics and loose talks. Those who get chance to leave kolkata and go to overseas, they never return back, they settle in USA, Canada and Europe. Government is doing nothing to create Jobs and even there are no direct flights from Kolkata to Europe because there are no MNCs. All the MNCs are opening offices in Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune & Bangalore. And Mechanical companies are preffering States like Maharastra, Gujrat, Rajasthan and Telengana. WB Goverment is busy with culture culture and culture, they need bigger outlook towards industry revolution. Culture is pet nahi barega. Young people have to leave their old parents in KOlkata to work in other cities. They cannot take care of their parents and home as there are no jobs in kolkata. Because more people are jobless in Kolkata, local goons are increasing, crime rate is increasing in Kolkata.

Because Metro Railway Kolkata is the only Metro system in India which run under IR and moreover Metro Railway Kolkata is Broad Gauge and need not to produce any standard gauge line…!India is top at jugad so ICF is making it!

One has to accept that when a country begins local manufacturing a quality is not as good as a company making the product for years together. The sprite to support and indignation is lacking in some Indians and hence a decision making people guided by such person who feels Indian material is always inferior. However the company named , were facing same situation in their country when they started. This situation never taken in to account by this so called expert and try to discourage the Make in India project. It would have been better if this so called expert keep their mouth shut.

Rajesh shah, you keep your mouth shut. To make world class trains, you need dedication towards work and no corruption. If you go to office just for taking salary, you will never make good products. That’s why India is wasting money in buying fighters and defence ammunition from America, Europe and Israel. DRDO spent 40 years and couldn’t build world class fighters like F22, F16. China is making bullet trains, do you think Chinese are HiFi, Chinese have same level of intelligence like indians, but they are dedicated to work and not corrupt. When indians go to USA or other countries they outperform in their work but those don’t like to work back home because of the office politics, loose talk in office and other reason in India. ICF , DRDO has to go long long way maybe next 100 years.

Hope before saying anything you should have checked up why one multinational company was not allowed to quot for MRVC II project. If you were knowing you would not have shown your love to white skin. Pl find out

      • R vshah says:

Good afternoon. If I keep my mouth shut and by this you cannot prove the non Indian company failed can be justified. Recent failure of metro at lacknow is best example. Also at MRVC I the supplier has to replace 900 mother bearing which was initially rejected by upright officer but certain people who fills white skin is always correct, forced to use oil bearing instead of grease bearing. Such incidence are nos but some section of people cover it up like you people are doing now and hence the correption and nepotism is increased. For your kind information Railway minister of china was hanged for corruption charges. So take a stock of all and then tell to silence encourageing voice to Indian product.

@TMRG – This is pretty good train. Why cant the authorities upgrade the Mumbai Locals rakes with ICF-Medha coaches? Is this very expensive?

This train is a prototype and still being tested in Kolkata.

Railways doesn’t have money to buy new trains. Over the last few years, new ICF-Siemens and ICF-Bombardier (not sure of quantity) trains have arrived in Mumbai. When it comes to looks, they’re nothing special and something which the citizens do not deserve.
