Mumbai Metro’s TBMs S1074 & T60 Arrive at Mumbai Port

This past weekend, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation welcomed the delivery of two new tunnel boring machines (TBMs) from China for building different sections of Mumbai Metro’s 33.5 km Line-3 tunnels between Cuffe Parade and Aarey Colony. Parts of Herrenknecht’s TBM S1074 and Terratec’s T60 made a touchdown at the Mumbai Port one after the other, after having successfully completed factory acceptance tests (FAT) in August 2017.

This Ø6.61m Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine passed FAT on August 17 and will be deployed by CEC-ITD Cem-TPL JV along with two others (S-1073, S-1075) to construct twin tunnels on Line-3’s 6.081 km package UGC-04, between Dharavi – Worli, through TBM launch shafts located at Naya Nagar in Mahim and Siddhivinayak.

TBM T60

This Ø6.68m Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine passed FAT on August 12 and will be deployed by the J Kumar Infraprojects – China Railway Tunnel Group JV along with 2 other new dual mode rock TBMs (T61, T62) and 2 refurbished TBMs (S63, S64) to build twin tunnels on the line’s 4.94 km package UGC-05 (Dharavi Station – CSIA T1 TBM receiving shaft) and 4.45 km package UGC-06 (CSIA T1 Station – Marol Naka TBM receiving shaft).

With this development, 4 out of 17 TBMs are now in the city. TBM S1073, after getting lowered into the Nayanagar Shaft in September, is currently being assembled for package UGC-04 (Dharavi – Worli) while parts of TBM T58 are currently stationed adjacent to the CST Station’s north shaft for package UGC-02 (CST – Mumbai Central).

I like how JKIL’s serial numbers align together T60, T61, T62, S63, S64 despite being a mix of old and new

Interesting observation! I think it was intentional as S63 & S64 had a different serial number during their Delhi days prior to getting refurbished for Mumbai.

      1) No major update. They’re aiming to start testing in December, but the first train (see design) from China is yet to arrive. Hopefully soon.
      2) Signalling tests are still underway. Finishing works along with ISA & CMRS’ inspection are pending.

      Nothing major for now.

For Line-2, I’m looking forward to the Duttabad section’s viaduct to get completed as well as the arrival of the 1st BEML train. On the underground side, Mahakaran Station’s work has started. TBM S639 will have to wait outside of the diaphragm wall until its built, and will eventually break through it towards the end of this year.

Hi @TMRG, is there any update on the Wadala to Thane metro? After the cancellation of bids, there’s complete silence it seems. At one point it appeared that this line was also on fast track, but not any more?

I haven’t seen bids being re-invited for Line-4, so most likely MMRDA is currently negotiating the contract value with the lowest bidders. Expecting some good news to be out soon.

Good to hear that such possibility is still alive. I thought it was reported that the bids for line 4 and 2b have been cancelled by mmrda.

MMRDA re-invited bids for a part of Line-2B (DN Nagar – Bandra – BKC section), so that section’s old bids have definitely been cancelled. Nothing yet on the other sections.
