(Pics) Operations Begin on Hyderabad Metro’s Line-1 and Line-3

A day after getting formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited’s contractor Keolis today started commercial operations on the first 29.80 km elevated stretch of Hyderabad Metro’s 3-line 72 km Phase 1 project between Miyapur – Ameerpet – Nagole.

Operations began at 6 am with 18 Hyundai Rotem trains getting deployed at a headway of 15 minutes through 24 stations spread across 2 lines –

• Line-1: Miyapur – Ameerpet (approx. 12.20 km)
Stations – Miyapur, JNTU, KPHB Colony, Kukatpally, Balanagar, Moosapet, Bharat Nagar, Erragadda, ESI Hospital, SR Nagar and Ameerpet (Interchange)

• Line-3: Nagole – Ameerpet (approx. 17.60 km)
Stations – Nagole, Uppal, Survey of India, NGRI, Habsiguda, Tarnaka, Mettuguda, Secunderabad East, Parade Grounds, Paradise, Rasoolpura, Prakash Nagar, Begumpet and Ameerpet (Interchange)

By noon, over 22,000 users took a ride on the system and L&TMRHL is expecting anywhere from 1 to 1.5 lakh users riding the system by the end of the day. I’ll add the day’s final ridership figure here whenever known.

The system’s fares (min Rs 10 and max Rs. 60) can be viewed here and a list of all major contractors here.

Great pics collection. Completing the remaining parts of Line 1 & Line 3 will boost the ridership manifold as they include the connectivity to IT hub and busy areas like Panjagutta, Nampally (Hyd railway station), Abids, Koti and Dilsukh nagar etc…

State govt need to start the expansion of the metro as soon as possible. While new lines may need more planning but the extension of line 1 on both ends can be started now itself. Extending the Line 1 from LB nagar to Hayath Nagar (~6KM) and from Miyapur to BHEL (~7KM) can be started now without any land requirement as the road is very wide in these stretches.

L&T doesn’t seem to be in a position to fund the lines’ extensions right away. They’ll most likely request for a high VGF assistance to do that, if the government wants work to start asap. From what I hear, Telangana govt is trying to get JICA onboard to finance Phase 2 (new lines and extensions). Will interesting to see if they’ll be built on the EPC model (like others) or PPP like Phase 1, and how that affects revenue distribution.

Is Hyderabad really 1st in India with CBTC? That’s what government is saying but I don’t think it’s right.

First system to test in 2014, but the third system to start operations. Other 2 are Kochi and Lucknow. Delhi will soon become #4.

Hi TMRG! How are you doing? Could you kindly tell me when will the Magenta Line (Kalkaji to Noida) section would open? You were saying it would open by Nov-end. What’s the problem now? And will the Pink Line (Mukundpur to South Campus) section open up by next month?

Hi, apparently there are some scheduling conflicts with local/national ministers who’d like to be a part of the inauguration event. I’ll write whenever the launch date is known.

Pink Line will open up in 2018. Still has pending finishing work at stations, civil construction work to connect adjacent stations and signalling tests.
