DMRC Invites Bids for 36 New Coaches on Delhi’s Airport Exp Line

On December 13, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation published a notice inviting tenders for the procurement of 36 new coaches (6 trains x 6 coaches) to run on its 22.9 km Airport Express Line.

Trains on the line currently run between the New Delhi Railway Station and Dwarka Sec-21 (see map), and by 2022 will run up to Dwarka’s Sector-25 through a new underground 1.878 km extension, so these new coaches will help maintain, if not improve, a 10 minute headway between trains.

Notice Inviting Tenders – RS14
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (DMRC) invites open e-tenders from agencies on international competitive bidding (ICB) basis for the design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning and training of 36 standard gauge cars for the Airport Metro Express Project

Tender documents were on sale between December 13 and February 7. DMRC has estimated the coaches’ procurement to cost Rs 396 crores and would like them to be delivered within 116 weeks of awarding the contract.

The line is currently equipped with 8 trains (with 6-coaches each) supplied by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) which can run up to a maximum speed of 120 kmph – take a virtual tour of one of the trains here. The 36 new coaches will have to be compatible with the line’s existing rolling stock and subsystems, so most likely CAF will go on to be the sole bidder and eventual winner of the contract.
