Delhi Airport APM (Air Train) – Information, Route Map, Tenders & Updates
Menu: Latest News & Construction Updates | Overview
Information
Delhi Air Train is a 7.7 km Automated People Mover (APM) system with 4 stations proposed by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) to serve Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport’s key terminals, Delhi Aerocity (hotel & business district) and cargo facilities.
The Air Train, also known as Sky Train at airports around the world, project is necessary for inter-terminal transfers as the current driving distance between terminals 1 and 3 is 7.5 km. Bus shuttle services run every 20 minutes but aren’t convenient or pleasant.
In addition, the Delhi Airport is currently being redeveloped with a new expanded Terminal 1, elevated taxiway and fourth runway slated to open in 2024 – see details. In place of Terminal 2, a new Terminal 4 is planned to be built and opened up in stages by 2030.
Similar train services are common at international airports having multiple terminals like Chicago, Singapore, Atlanta, and so-on.
Current Status
In February 2018, Japan’s Nippon Koei Co., LTD. prepared a feasibility report for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) with an aim improve connectivity between the airport terminals and alleviate congestion around the airport by introducing Japanese technology to DIAL’s APM. The report recommends the use of a rubber-type APM system with a max speed of 80 km/hr. The suggestion is based on existing APMs around the world (61 installed), existence of multiple suppliers and low operations & maintenance (O&M) cost.
DIAL has received several proposals from different European & Japanese suppliers, but has not yet finalized plans. Whenever finalized, the Air Train is expected to take up to 3 years to get built & commissioned.
