Information
Coimbatore (Kovai) Metro with 2 elevated lines is a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) proposed to be built in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).
Coimbatore Metro’s Phase 1 project has been on the drawing board since at least 2011. In 2017, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. was appointed as the Project Executing Agency (PEA) and immediately invited bids for its feasibility study and Detailed Project Report (DPR) in 2 stages, funded by the German government through the KfW development bank.
In November 2019, a consortium of SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Ltd. – RITES Ltd. submitted its feasibility report for a 136 km master plan with 5 lines to CMRL.
Coimbatore Metro Phase 1’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) suggests building a 34.8 km elevated network with 2 lines. Both lines will be connected via a inter-corridor connection north of Coimbatore Junction Station which will serve as an interchange.
Current Status
Coimbatore Metro’s DPR was submitted to the Government of Tamil Nadu in July 2023 and approved in February 2024. It is currently waiting approval from India’s Central Government.
In July 2024, officials from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) visited Coimbatore on a fact-finding mission to possibly grant a loan towards Coimbatore Metro’s development.

Coimbatore Metro Fares (Ticket Prices)
Coimbatore Metro’s fare prices, structure and rules have not been finalized or announced yet. That will be done closer to the start of commercial operations.
