Bangalore Airport Terminal 2 – Design & Status
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is undergoing a major expansion project which will see a new Terminal 2 (T2) and a second runway (commissioned in 2019) in Devanahalli, Karnataka.
Terminal 2 is to developed in 2 phases to handle 25 million passengers per annum in Phase 1 and 45 million passengers per annum in Phase 2. It’s been designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) architects and its civil construction contract was awarded to Larsen & Toubro with a value of approximately Rs. 3000 crore.
BIAL is also constructing Bengaluru Airport City on 463 acres of land surrounding the airport featuring a concert area, Retail, Dining and Entertainment (RDE) Village, business park, and 775 rooms in a combo hotel (managed by Ginger Vivanta).
Phase 1 Expansion
Phase 1 of Bangalore Airport’s Terminal 2 was inaugurated on November 11, 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will open for commercial operations in mid-January 2023, likely on Sunday January 15.
- Estimated Cost: Rs 13,000 crorw
- Built-up Area: 255,000 sq.m
- Opening (first flight): Mid-January 2023
The project is founded on four pillars: technological leadership, the idea of a terminal in a garden, environmental and ecological stewardship, and a celebration of Karnataka’s rich heritage and culture.
The new terminal, unofficially called Garden Terminal will feature trees, small gardens and ponds with local species of plants. Passageways throughout the terminal will connect the passengers with nature. The ceiling at the entrance, check-in and security area will feature hanging planted bells.
The new terminal will also feature a large indoor garden with rammed-earth walls and waterfalls, which will act as a gateway into the densely-landscaped retail area. The three-storeyed forest belt is set to offer an unique outdoor experience for arriving and departing passengers. It will be well connected to the shopping area. The forest belt will be viewable from all main indoor spaces.
Kempegowda International Airport Terminal 2 expansion project includes a new multi-level car parking area and a multi-modal transport hub (MMTH) from where riders can board a Blue Line metro train (metro project’s Phase 2B) to connect to and from Bengaluru city.
