Vadhavan Port – Information & Status Updates
Vadhavan Port is an approved greenfield seaport in Palghar District, Maharashtra, India. Construction on Vadhavan Port along the Arabian Sea is expected to start in January 2025. The port is planned to become operational by December 2029.
Vadhavan Port on India’s west coast will be India’s deepest seaport with a natural depth of 20 meters. Its construction and development will be carried out by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and MMB (Maharashtra Maritime Board).
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Vadhavan Port’s construction work on August 30, 2024.
The port will have 9 container terminals, each 1000 meters long, 4 multipurpose berths, including the coastal berth, 4 liquid cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth.
Vadhavan Port’s total estimated cost (including land acquisition) is Rs. 76,220 crore. The project envisions to create a cumulative capacity of 298 million metric tons (MMT) per annum, with a potential to create 10 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Current Status
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Vadhavan Port’s construction work on August 30, 2024.
Vadhavan Port was approved for construction by India’s Central Government’s cabinet on June 19, 2024. The port is a key project within the Indian government’s Sagarmala initiative to enhance the performance of the country’s logistics sector.

Location & Access
Vadhavan Port’s site in Maharashtra’s Palghar District is located 70 km north of Mumbai and 111 km north of Jawaharlal Nehru Port (view on Google Maps)
The project will be connected to the Delhi – Mumbai Expressway via a link expressway (shown in black below) and form a major part of the proposed India – Middle East – Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

Key Milestones
June 2015: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Maharashtra Maritime Board had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the development of Vadhavan Port.
February 2020: Vadhavan Port was declared as the thirteenth “major port” in India by the Central Government.
February 2024: India’s environment ministry granted environmental clearance for the project.
June 2024: India’s Central Government’s Cabinet approved construction of Vadhavan Port.
