Vizhinjam Port – Information & Status Updates
Adani Group’s Vizhinjam Port (IN NYY1) is a partially operational deep water container transshipment port located south-east of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala, India.
The project is officially known as Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram (VIST) and will be developed in 3 phases. The port is located at the intersection of the Arabian Sea & Indian Ocean, and will be operated by the Adani Group’s subsidiary for a period of 40 years.
Vizhinjam Port project is India’s first deep-water port with the water depth in and around Vizhinjam varying from 23 to 27 meters.
Construction on Vizhinjam Port began in December 2015 with an original deadline of September 2018. The project has faced major delays due to Cyclone Okchi, COVID-19 pandemic, and protests over environmental concerns.
Phase 1 of Vizhinjam Port is expected to be completed in September 2024 and will provide a capacity to handle 1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit).

Current Status
On July 12, 2024, Vizhinjam Port received its first cargo ship (‘Mother Ship’) named San Fernando from Gujarat’s Mundra Port.
Phase 1 of Vizhinjam Port is expected to be completed in September 2024 and will provide a capacity to handle 1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit).
On October 15 2023, a ship named ‘Zhen Hua 15’ carrying Vizhinjam Port’s cranes became the first ship to dock at the port.
