Information
Chandigarh Metro or Tricity Metro with 3 elevated lines and 60+ stations is a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) proposed to be built in Chandigarh, Mohali & New Chandigarh (Punjab) and Panchkula (Haryana).
Chandigarh Metro’s Phase 1 project has been on the drawing board since at least the year 2000. Several Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for Chandigarh Metro have been prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES).
Chandigarh Metro Phase 1’s new DPR recommends building 3 metro lines totaling 77 kms with 35 km within Chandigarh, 11 km within Panchkula and 31 km within Mohali and New Chandigarh. The system will feature 2-coach trains with a depot planned to be built on 21 hectares of land in New Chandigarh, Punjab.
The alternative analysis report (AAR) prepared by RITES suggests Chandigarh Metro’s estimated cost will be Rs. 24,142 crore.
Current Status
As of August 2024, Chandigarh Metro’s DPR is currently being finalized. Land acquisition for the project has not yet started. All 3 metro routes planned in Phase 1 are currently being examined for viability and the possibility of being taken underground keeping aesthetics in mind.

Some of the routes being explored for Phase 2 include:
- Airport Chowk to Manakpur Kallar (5 km)

Chandigarh Metro’s fare prices, structure and rules have not been finalized or announced yet. That will be done closer to the start of commercial operations.
