Gaimukh – Fountain Hotel Junction Tunnel – Information & Updates

5.5 km Gaimukh – Fountain Hotel Junction Tunnel project by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is an approved road project connecting Thane – Bhayandar north of Mumbai, Maharashtra.

This tunnel is one of two components being built on a 15.5 km stretch to decongest Ghodbunder Road (MH SH 42) between Gaimukh and Bhayandar. The other component involves construction of a 10 km elevated road from Fountain Hotel Junction to Bhayandar.

The tunnel will likely be built by deploying at least one mega tunnel boring machine (TBM).

The entire project was approved with an estimated cost of Rs 20,000 crore in July 2024 by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister during MMRDA’s executive meeting.

Current Status

In July 2024, MMRDA invited bids for the construction of Gaimukh – Fountain Hotel Junction tunnel project with a 4.5 year construction deadline. A contractor is expected to be appointed by the end of 2024.
