Thane – Borivali Tunnel Project – Information & Updates
11.84 km Thane – Borivali Twin Tunnel project by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is an approved road project in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Thane – Borivali tunnel project will be constructed by Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL) and feature 2 x 10.8 km road tunnels under Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) with a combined 1 km of approach roads on both ends.
The project’s foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Modi on July 13, 2024.
The project’s tunnels with 3 lanes each will be built using 4 mega tunnel boring machines (TBMs), supplied by Herrenknecht, at a maximum depth of 23m below the surface and connect Magathane’s Ekta Nagar in Borivali and Tikuji-Ni-Wadi at Manpada in Thane.
Thane – Borivali tunnel project is estimated to cost Rs. 13,200 crore. It aims to drastically reduce the driving time between both spots from 1-2 hours (depending on day/time) to just about 15 minutes.

Current Status
Thane – Borivali tunnel project’s groundbreaking (bhoomi poojan) ceremony was performed by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 13, 2024.
Thane – Borivali tunnel project will be constructed via 2 civil packages. In May 2023, Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL) was declared as the preferred bidder for both packages beating Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
Hill International has been appointed as the project’s Project Management Consultant (PMC).
