DMRC to Finalize Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2 DPR by 2017
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation which was tasked by the Gujarat government in February 2016 for preparing Surat and Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2 Detailed Project Reports is expected to submit its report to the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) by the end of the year.
This phase is estimated to cost Rs 6,500 crore and will include a northward extension of the 17.23 km Line-2 from Motera towards Gandhinagar and potentially another line connecting to the under development GIFT City to add another 30 kms to the under construction 37.77 km Phase 1 network.
In February 2016, the Gujarat state government had allocated a sum of Rs 2 crore in its 2016-17 state budget for preparing the second phase’s DPR. Here’s an excerpt from page 128 of the state’s Urban Development & Urban Housing sector’s budget report:
The Metro Rail is the most effective way for transportation in urban areas. Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase –I is in progress. Now MEGA Company is planning to expand the route from Gandhinagar to GIFT City and connected to Airport in the Phase _II and also planning to Metro Rail in Surat City. To prepare Draft Project Report (DPR) through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) for Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase II and Surat City.
As per a MEGA official who interviewed with IE:
The entire second phase will not have any underground section and so it will cost less than Phase I. DMRC has already begun conducting the traffic and topographic studies and is expected to finalise the DPR by December end. In the second phase, the Motera Metro station (on the North-South Corridor of Phase I) will be connected to Gandhinagar. The proposed route will be: Motera-Koba circle-Indroda circle-Saint Xavier’s school-Police Bhavan-Akshardham Temple-Mahatma Mandir
Other details of the project like the number, location of stations and depot are still being hashed out. Once the DPR is finalized & available, I’ll make sure to create a map displaying the route and stations.
