3 Major Hurdles in Navi Mumbai Metro’s Way

According to a report in the Mid-Day, there are 3 major hurdles standing in the way of Navi Mumbai’s Metro project. If these aren’t solved soon enough, then the project would again miss its new deadline of becoming operational in May 2017. These hurdles are procedural for clearances at various locations and should have been taken care of by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) much earlier.

The three hurdles are:

1. The Central Railway (CR) needs to approve the construction of a 100 meter steel bridge over the railway lines near Taloja. The approval process is now said to be in its final stage.
2. Permissions from various agencies is required to extend the height of a high-tension wires between Belapur and Kharghar to let the metro line pass below it.
3. CIDCO is awaiting approval from the traffic department to start construction across the Sion-Panvel Highway (see pic below). Currently they are coming up with a traffic diversion plan.

These approvals are very basic in nature and should have been sought in 2012 when construction began. It just goes to show CIDCO’s lack of experience and absolutely callous attitude in executing this project. I’m not impressed.
