[Pics] Delhi Metro’s Phase III Trains Unveiled
The new train-sets are now public! Different depots in Delhi have started receiving new trains for the 2 new under construction lines that will be operational in late 2016.
In 2013, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had given the 486 coach order to Hyundai Rotem to provide 81 new trains sets. While there was some controversy over the bidding that got nasty, the issue was resolved earlier this year and Hyundai started shipping trains from Changwon, South Korea to India in May through the Mundra Port in Gujarat.
Pink Line Train (Line-7) – Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar (58 km)
Brown Line Train (Line-8) – Janakpuri West – Botanical Garden (38 km)
Please note: As per recent reports, Line-8 is now Magenta instead of Brown.
The six-coach trains have advanced features like increased speed, USB slots and larger capacity. Just like the Hyderabad metro, these trains can also be operated without a driver. While 20 sets of trains will be delivered from South Korea, the rest 61 will be manufactured locally at BEML’s plant in Bangalore.

According to the DMRC, the new trains have undergone significant technological as well as eco-friendly upgrades, and many additional features have been added to increase passenger comfort. Each coach can accommodate a maximum of 380 passengers, which translates to 2,280 passengers in each train set of six coaches.
The display inside the trains will be clearer and sharper. Each coach is fitted with four 18.5 inch LCD screens to run audio-visuals messages and commercials. They also have improved design features like better regeneration of energy during braking, energy efficient sub-systems like LED lighting and air conditioning systems.
Since sections of both the Brown and Magenta lines are a good year away from being operational, the trains pictured above will spending the majority of the next 12 months in their respective depots while patiently waiting to be joined by their siblings from Changwon and Bangalore.
