Chennai Metro Exploring Extension of Phase 2 by 35 Km to 123 Km
Remember the 88 Km Phase 2 with 3 new lines that was planned by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL)? As per a new report in the Indian Express, CMRL officials are now exploring the possibilities to further extend it by 35 km to a grand total of 123.7 kms!
Here are the proposed extensions:
Line 3: The 41 km Madhavaram to Siruseri line is proposed to be extended by 9 km from Madhavaram to the residential area of Red Hills which will also help serve the Samuel Nagar, Chettimedu, Alinjivakkam & Puzhal lake areas. Total = 50 km
Line 4: The 14 km Koyambedu to Light House line is proposed to be extended by 11 km from Koyambedu to Poonamalee which will also help to serve the Maduravoyal, Munikrishna Nagar, Madhiravedu & Vanagaram residential areas. Total = 25 km
Line 5: The 33 km Madhavaram to Perumbakkam line is proposed to be extended by 14.7 km from Madhavaram to Wimco Nagar to meet the Blue line which will soon be extended by 9 km from Washermenpet. This extension will help serve the Manali, Harikrishnapuram and Masilamani Nagar areas. Total = 47.7 km
Here’s a map I’ve made which shows these additions in the western & northern parts of the city:
The Detailed Project Report for which a consultant will soon be appointed will reveal whether these additions will be elevated or underground. If this proposal is approved, then by the end of Phase 2, Chennai Metro will have a total of ~177 km of lines! This includes the 45.1 Km Phase 1, 9 km extension of the Blue line to Wimco Nagar and the 123 km Phase 2.

When can we expect approval of these line ? Already our first phase is way behind schedule..
In cities like Chennai is badly needed
Hi, I agree these lines are urgently needed. it can about a year after the DPR has been prepared for all approvals to be secured.
Hi , I am delighted to hear that there is some serious discussion on Metro for OMR . As I see it , the time lines are one year each for DPR and approvals .
Further down the line , what can be an optimistic time line for a Metro ride to Sholinganallur , if all goes well .
R.Ravichandran
Hi, the DPR is at least another 6 months away from being finalized after which it will take 1-2 years for the state government’s approval, foreign loans to be secured, bidding to be carried out and for construction to start. Realistically, the metro ride to Sholinganallur is another 7 years away.
Do you see airport route extended to Tambaram
sir madhavaram to medavakkam will be cross velachery junction or through alandur
Ridership will be maximum from Poonamallee, good that it is extending until that.
Madhavaram to Wimco nagar and Siruseri to Kilambakkam are much needed extension. We’re expecting them in near future…
It can also be extended till mamallapuram from SIPCOT 2 station (siru seri) there by increasing tourist in this place. Currently there is no continuous service of MTC busses in this route
Government also had a plan of extending MRTS service from light house till mamallapuram. But the plan is shelved permanently.
