RITES Feasibility Report Recommends a 30 Km Agra Metro System with 2 Lines

A feasibility report submitted by the Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) for a metro system in Agra has recommended a 30 km metro network in Phase 1 consisting of 2 lines with a total of 30 stations. Of these, 11 stations will be underground while the rest will be elevated.

The 2 proposed lines are:

Line-1: Agra Cantt. Railway Station to Kalindi Vihar with 14 elevated stations & 1 underground station
Line-2: Sikandra to Taj East Gate with 5 elevated stations & 10 underground stations

Alignment of both lines:

As you can clearly figure out, an interchange will be built at St. John’s college which is a part of Agra University.

Since the lines will connect and pass by numerous heritage buildings & structures, many of the stations will be built underground and a little away from them. For example, the ‘Sikandra station’ will be built about 500 meters away from Akbar’s tomb located in Sikandra, a suburb of Agra. Similarly, the underground ‘Agra Fort station’ (the fort’s location can faintly be seen written in the center of the map) will be built at the government nursery adjoining the Agra Golf Course. The ‘Taj East Gate station’ will be elevated and has been proposed to be built on the PWD land along the Fatehabad road near Hotel Trident.

As for connectivity, both lines have been meticulously designed to connect with important areas. For instance, Line 1 will connect the Agra Cantt railway station with Sanjay Place, the city’s largest commercial complex, on its way to the Trans Yamuna Colony of Kalindi Vihar. On the other hand, Line 2 will connect with the Raja Ki Mandi railway station and the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) located along NH-2 in the Transport Nagar area. Both of these stations will be underground.

Stations on Line 1: Agra Cantt. , Sadar Bazaar, Pratap Pura, Collectorate, Subhash Park, St. John’s (Agra University), Sanjay Place, MG Road, Nehru Nagar, Sultanganj, Kamla Nagar, Rambagh, Foundary Nagar, Mandi Samiti & Kalindi Vihar

Note: Only the Nehru Nagar station in Line 1 will be underground. The rest will be elevated.

Stations on Line 2: Sikandra, Guru Ka Taal, ISBT, University, RBS College, Raja Ki Mandi, St. John’s (Agra University), Medical College, Hing Ki Mandi, Jama Masjid, Agra Fort, Purani Mandi, Fatehabad Road, Basai & Taj East Gate

Note: In this line, 10 stations will be built underground. The elevated ones are at: Guru Ka Taal, Purani Mandi, Fatehabad Road, Basai & Taj East Gate.

According to  the Agra Development Authority, RITES is now going to submit a draft copy of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) by the end of October and a final copy by mid November. After that, the DPR will be sent to the state government for their approval and an implementation agency (along the lines of DMRC, BMRCL) will be formed to execute Agra’s Metro!
