Chennai Metro Introduces Tourist Card with Unlimited Single Day Rides
In order to further boost ridership & cultivate loyalty, the Chennai Metro Rail Corp yesterday introduced Tourist Cards at discounted rates. This comes just weeks after they introduced Trip Passes valid for a fixed number of rides for 7, 30 and 60 days. For more info on tourist passes, please see: CMRL Introduces Trip Passes at Discounted Rates.
A tourist card can be bought at any station for Rs 100 with a Rs 50 refundable deposit, and allows travelers to take unlimited rides on a single day. The card must be used within 30 days of purchase.
With the Chennai Metro’s relatively high fares (see table) ranging from Rs. 10 to Rs. 40 , general users who daily use the route to go back and forth multiple times can use this card to their benefit. For example, the cost to go from Alandur to Koyambedu is Rs 40. If a traveler buys the tourist card and makes 3 trips, then he/she would end up saving Rs 20. Any further trips on the same day would be virtually free! Using a smart card 3 times in the above scenario would only bring a 10% discount which is equivalent to saving Rs 12, so you can easily see how the tourist card can be used for your benefit.
