Hyderabad Metro’s 420 ft Cantilever Section Over Punjagutta Flyover is Now Ready!

The Hyderabad Metro’s short hop over the Punjagutta flyover is now ready! This 420 feet/128 meter long cantilever section is a part of the Miyapur – L B Nagar metro line which passes on the west side of the Hussain Sagar lake.

Given how busy the Punjagutta intersection is, Larsen & Toubro decided to build an arch-shaped cantilever section here instead of launching precast girders. While the flyover is 23 feet high, the metro’s viaduct is 51 feet high above the ground. The central span of this iconic structure is 190 feet long and the adjacent spans are 115 feet each on either sides. Work on the piers that support the structure started early last year and over the past 10 months, the deck was cast in-situ (i.e. on site). Only last week did L&T start removing the scaffolding and green safety net to reveal the sleek structure to everyone.

As you can see, now segments to form the parapet wall along the structure’s deck are being installed.

Similar cantilever sections can be found in Chennai at the Kathipara junction and in Delhi at many locations such as Preet Vihar, Shakarpur and Punjabi Bagh.

It seems like a beam resting on a pier than a cantilever stretching out
