Andhra Pradesh Cabinet Approves 42.54 Km Visakhapatnam Metro Project
The Andhra Pradesh state cabinet today approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for Visakhapatnam (Vizag)’s Metro system! The system will comprise of 3 elevated lines consisting 41 stations totaling 42.54 km. Work is expected to begin by the middle of 2016 and completed by the end of 2020.
The DPR’s preparation began in January this year and was ready by August. In September, the Andhra Pradesh government entrusted the execution of the Vijayawada and Vizag metro projects to the DMRC who’ll manage the development of these projects like they did & continue to do for Jaipur, Kochi and Noida’s metro systems.
The 3 lines that will comprise Vizag’s metro system are:
• Line 1 – Gajuwaka to Kommadi – 30.38 km with stations at Kommadi Junction, Hanumanthawaka Junction, Maddilapalem, Gurudwara Junction, Akkayyapalem, Kancharapalem, Muralinagar, Government Polytechnic College, Thatichetlapalem, Kancharapalem, Murali Nagar, GSI, NAD Junction, Visakhapatnam International Airport, Sheela Nagar, BHPV, Auto Nagar and Gajuwaka.
• Line 2 – Gurudwara Junction to Old Post Office – 5.25 km with stations at BVK College, RTC Complex, Dabagardens, Saraswati Circle, Poorna Market and Old Post Office.
• Line 3 – Thatichetlapalem to Chinna Waltair – 6.91 km with stations at New Railway Colony, Railway Station, Allipuram Junction, RTC Complex, Siripuram Junction, Andhra University and Chinna Waltair.
Here’s a map I’ve made which shows the alignment of the 3 lines:
With this approval out of the way, one final approval from the Central government is left. As with other metro projects, the tendering process can begin prior to that, and I expect it to begin by January 2016! In celebration of this approval, I’ve now added a new archive/category page for Visakhapatnam’s metro with previous posts.
