Groundbreaking Ceremonies Conducted for Mumbai Metro’s Line 3

Contractors across Mumbai yesterday conducted bhoomi poojas / groundbreaking ceremonies to launch construction work for the city’s 33.5 km Line-3 metro project. Ceremonies were conducted one after the other at all 7 packages of the project for which contracts were awarded to 5 contractors/JVs in July 2016. A map of the line along with other details can be viewed here.

Hi TMRG, in how many years do you expect this 35 km strech of UG line to get completed and start complete operations?

Hi, in or after 2023 and not anytime sooner than that.

        2023? I thought the deadline was 2019?

Hi, the 2019 deadline was set a couple years back, but the tendering stage for civil construction took a lot more time than it should have. In the coming years, the deadline will be revised. The MH govt will probably not announce it though due to political reasons.

There are a lot of variables at play (geology, land acquisition, contractor performance etc) and they’ll ultimately decide when the line opens. Even if things fall in place correctly, then 2023 is the soonest I imagine it’ll open for services

Any idea when Line 2 will start construction? This line has been delayed and delayed for long.
