BMRCL Adds New Station at Challegatta on Bangalore’s Purple Line

Seeing a genuine need to provide connectivity south of the NICE Peripheral Road, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. has interestingly decided to add a new station in the Challegatta – Kambipura area to serve as the under construction Purple Line’s future western terminal in the Phase 2 project.

Contracts for the Purple Line’s 8.814 western extension from Mysore Road to Kengeri were awarded to IL&FS Engineering for Reach 2A in April 2015 and Soma Enterprises for Reach 2B in March 2016, but at that time didn’t include this station. The scope of Reach 2B (see map) did however include the construction of an approximately 2.5 km viaduct from Kengeri station across the NICE Peripheral Road in order to provide a connection to the proposed Challegatta Depot.

With the inclusion of this station, Reach 2A & Reach 2B will now consist & contribute 7 new stations to the network at Nayandahalli, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bangalore University, Pattanagere, Mailasandra, Kengeri & Challegatta.

As for the mechanics of construction, the BMRCL hasn’t revealed whether they’ll invite bids for this new station or modify the package’s scope and negotiate a new contract value with Soma Enterprises similar to what was done between LMRCL and Larsen & Toubro in Lucknow. If you were to ask me, I believe they will go for the second option. That’s a far easier & time-saving option.

Where did you get information that a new station at Challaghatta would be added to Phase 2 extension of east-west extension? As per Metro November news letter, Kengeri is the last station in that section. Challaghatta is a depot, not a station. Did I miss something?

Hi, see the linked up article in the very first sentence of my post. This has been in the works for quite some time, but only now has the MD publicly announced/commented on it.

        Hi,
they have yet to announce officially. Guess they were waiting for Mysore highway widening announcement , which happened a few weeks back. Donot know how it affects BMRC overall plan, but road widening itself should not call for sudden extension of this section in phase 2. Let us wait for December BMRCL newsletter for any mention of this.

The viaduct to Challegatta was anyways going to be built by Soma – there’s no extension per se but just the inclusion of another station.

This plan has been in the works for months and is not a sudden decision.

I see no harm in extending the metro by 2-3 KM in every direction (beyond phase 2 ) as it will help to decongest the city.Once people see good connectivity then residential and office complex can be come up

The rate at which Bangalore city is growing ,it makes a lot of sense

Extension of West line on Mysore road upto Chellgatta and adding a new station, beyond Nice junction is a good idea where a depot is planned. Suggest that this place be made into an important hub for different modes of transport for city buses and inter city buses moving on Mysore road. The complex should have bus bays where buses can enter, pick up passengers and drop them. People coming from outstation can disembark there and take Metro to other parts of city. Chennai Central railway station has buses entering the station area and facilitating passengers to use city buses. The place should have ample parking space, autorickshaw and taxi stand, some shopping area. BMRCL should acquire enough land around when prices are low.

A similar model should be adopted, of creating a hub of various modes of transport on all terminal points on main highways where Metro line is ending. Kanakpura road last station should be planned beyond the Nice road intersection.
