1st Segment Launched for Bangalore Metro’s Anjanapura Extension

On the night of December 10, NCC Ltd. successfully launched the first ever pre-cast segment just south of the proposed Krishna Leela Park station’s site for building the Bangalore Metro Green Line’s 6.29 km southern extension to Anjanapura Township. This milestone was accomplished roughly 10 months after they won the contract to build package Reach 4B of the Bangalore Metro’s 72 km Phase 2 project between Yelachenahalli and Anjanapura Township.

This section includes 5 new stations at Anjanpura Cross Road, Krishna Leela Park, Vajrahalli, Thalgattapura and Anjanapura Township and is expected to become operational in late 2019.

Each segment weighs 40 tons and usually 10 segments are required to build one span between two adjacent piers. For this section, NCC will launch 2020 segments which they’re currently casting at their yard in the nearby Thataguni Village. As per BMRCL’s December 2016 newsletter, 183 of them had been cast by the end of November 2016 – see recent images.

Here’s my go-to video to demonstrate how the Launching Gantry works its magic with precast segments to build modern segmental viaducts and bridges:

Going forward, I’ll be posting one-off construction images on Twitter so do follow or check out my handle.

What about Reach 2B? When will launching work start? That contract was awarded 9 months before this one.

Hi, that reach suffered delays due to tree-cutting approvals and just this week they started assembling a launching gantry in Nayandahalli (see pic). Give it another 30-45 days for segment launching to commence.

This is great but after seeing your recent articles, I’m wondering how the construction progress will look like elsewhere. This is what we have for Reach 4B…

    Bids invited: Feb 2015
    Contract given: Jan 2016
    1st span completed: Dec 2016

So they took 22 months to build the 1st span after BMRCL floated tenders. Assuming this is the best cast scenario, will the first spans for Whitefield and Electronic City lines only come up in 2018? How are they going to meet the 2020 deadline?

There is a simple answer to that and TMRG himself has already mentioned this. They wont!

      S Maandav –
      (1) That’s correct. I’d say anytime in the 2nd half of 2018. Ultimately, it’ll depend on when the contract is awarded, utility shifting/traffic diversion approvals are received and the contractor’s performance.

      (2) They won’t. The govt & CPRO are promising a mid 2019 opening for all extensions (R2A, R2B, R3C, R4B, R1A, R1B) and R5, but that won’t be possible as too much time has been lost in pre-construction delays. I’m expecting only R2A (Mysore Rd – Pattanagere) and R4 (Yelachenahalli – Anjanapura Township) to open by 2020.

R5 (HSR Layout-Bomassandra) has a long way to go and won’t open anytime before 2021. Keep in mind that for R5, they also have to invite bids for constructing a new depot, procuring new rolling stock and other subsystems as well. Hopefully soon.

What is the hurry to get Anjanapura reach metro??????

There is no hurry to build silkboard – KR Puram, utter non-sense..

Anjanapura extension is an early bird project or low hanging fruit for the BMRCL. After Phase 1’s experience, you would have thought they’d prioritize the Nagawara-Gottigere line’s UG section :/

BMRCL has performed the necessary legwork to get the Silkboard – KR Puram line’s construction started, but there are 2 major roadblocks – (1) Funding – which companies are going to fund it? (2) State Cabinet’s approval.

It is very sad to hear that we have to wait one more year. I think that Phase 1 can take about 10 lakh people daily and have huge impact in certain parts of City once the entire stretch is completed.
Say Peneya to Banashankari in 30 or 40 min is simply amazing to hear.

A depot is planned to be built at the Roerich and Devikarani Estate. The main-line will be extended there, but no additional station has been planned to built there in Phase 2. Perhaps they might do it in Phase 3? Let’s see.
