PMRDA Approves Pune Metro’s Hinjewadi-Shivaji Nagar Line-3

With civic elections coming up in early 2017, small and big-ticket projects in Pune are suddenly getting a much required push these days…

Yesterday, the Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) chaired by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister approved the Detailed Project Report for the city’s 23.33 km Line-3 connecting Hinjewadi with Shivaji Nagar via 23 stations at an estimated cost of Rs. 7947 crore. The entirely elevated line’s DPR was prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation which submitted its report to the PMRDA in July 2016 after being tasked to do so in November 2015.

Line 3 stations – Megapolis Circle, Quadran, Dohler, Infosys Phase II, Wipro Phase II, Pall India,  Shivaji Chowk, Hinjewadi, Wakad Chowk, Balewadi Stadium, NICMAR, Ram Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Balewadi Phata, Baner Gaon, Baner, Krushi Anusadhan, Sakal Nagar, University, R.B.I., Agriculture College and Shivaji Nagar (interchange with Line-1)

Interestingly the above map (sourced from Pune Metro’s website) shows the line extending onward to Line-2’s Civil Court Station. The section between Shivaji Nagar and Civil Court is not in the DPR, but this does give an indication of where the line will be extended to in the future.

The line will pass through both Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) territories and end up at the city’s information technology hub of Hinjewadi which, like other IT parks around the country, is plagued by severe traffic congestion. On the administrative side, it’ll be implemented in Phase 2 and now has a couple more hoops to jump through, including the Maharashtra cabinet’s approval as well as the union government cabinet’s approval. As witnessed in Phase 1 and elsewhere around the country, both of these approvals can take anywhere from 2-5 years to receive.

It’s funny what elections on the horizon can do all over India. The country will benefit a lot if they shorten terms to 4 years instead of 5.

Wish this line gets extended to Hadapsar! Would cover more area and plus Rlys has plans for the existing station

With the way they’ve positioned the line on the east-end, connecting Hadapsar to me seems like the next logical step.

In my view, connectors/interchange stations should be well planned for better coverage and optimum use. With the current planning if a person from PCMC has to reach hinjewadi phase 3 for work he has to go to shivajinagar to interchange , what a joke. Don’t you think we need a connector from say hinjewadi station or wakad circle to connect onto the PCMC line somewhere at kasarwadi or akurdi ??. Needs some thinking for sure !

True boss. It should get extended to akhrudi and beyond till talegaon. Ample space to construct fast at this time. Many projects coming up and also exists. Ppl are pouring in with flats occupied, finding difficult to commute with less frequency of trains and road traffic conjesion. It’s high time metro services are provided from akhrudi as well.

It’s really unfortunate that every time PCMC area is being neglected by respective authorities. Requesting Hon. Chief Minister to interfere in this so that Metro will pass through Aundh, Sangvi, Rakshak Chowk, Jagtap Dairy route as lot of IT professional who are working in Hinjewadi are staying here.

Does not agree on this … Swati … Baner has got Baner Mhalunge route and also it connects with Pune Mumbai highway …. so doesn’t add any benefit … instead route through Jagtap Dairy / Pimple Saudagar, Mankar chowk could have covered densely populated areas … so the decision by government is very unfortunate 🙁 … and needs to be strongly opposed.

Agree.. Really strange as major population is in & around this area(Aundh, Sangvi, Rakshak Chowk, Jagtap Dairy route) only .Current route looks influenced by builders.

It is so disappointing that they didn’t even consider connecting Magarpatta city and Amanora Township which has emerged heavily with both resident and IT professional population. Moreover this area is plagued with traffic congestion due to excessive private cars and cabs as there is no decent public transport system.

Next Step – Needed Circular Outer Metro Line for Pune & PCMC connecting the below points and passing through the airport:

    Hinjewadi / Wakad
    Nigdi
    Talawade
    Bhosari
    Lohegaon Airport
    Wagholi
    Kharadi
    Hadapsar
    Undri
    Dhankawadi
    Warje
    Bawdhan
    Sus Road
    Balewadi Stadium
    Hinjewadi

Intersections with other lines can be planned at Wakad, PCMC and Ramwadi.
Land acquisition wont be much if an issue as these are outskirt areas and the required Municipal Corps would definitely arrange for something here.

This metro project has no space to grow.
If they need to add two lines. Pcmc has much space. Wakad, pimple soudagar,
Punawale ravet pimpri has much open space and 80% people come from this area to hinjewadi.

What a stupid route most of the people who works in hinjewadi stays in Pimple Gurav, Pimpri, Kalewadi, Pimple Saudagar, Wakad, Chinchwad, Pimpri, Rahatani, Kaspate vasti, vishal nagar. How bad things can be. No survey nothing, very disappointing
And their is no route for that. This is the exact example of how things can go worst when politics start getting involve in bad vote game, as people know that what ever happens crowd working in IT Company is nothings agains the local vote.

In proposed metro the route should pass through wakad, vishal nagar, pimple nilakh, rakshak chowk, sangavi, aundh as many of the people are staying in this area. MOREEVER maximum traffic congetion takes place on this route every day. This will also be beneficial to those students who are going for study in the school situated at Hinjewadi.Wakad and nearby places.

Hinjewadi to Bhoomkar chowk is also the most peak area.
Traffic in bhoomkar chowk is like hell overcrowded now a days.
One Metro station stoppage should be there exact in the Bhoomkar chowk area. to avoid most of the traffic.
