Earlier this month, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd began the initial legwork for executing Chennai’s upcoming 107.55 km Phase 2 metro project. In a series of notices, they’ve bids from global and Indian consultants to prepare the detailed designs of a portion of the upcoming 45.77 km Line-3 and 44.66 km Line-5. In addition, they’ve also invited bids from geotechnical engineering firms for carrying out soil investigations along both lines’ routes.
• Line-3 – Madhavaram – SIPCOT (45.77 km) with 50 stations
• Line-5 – Madhavaram – Sholinganallur (44.66 km) with 46 stations

CMRL also published 6 notices for carrying out geotechnical soil investigations, via boreholes, along Line-3 and Line-5’s routes. The data captured through this activity will serve two purposes – (1) help determine optimal line alignments, especially in the underground sections, and (2) help infrastructure companies submit accurate financial bids during the bidding stage and use appropriate machinery, methods & technology during construction.

The above tender notices only cover a portion of both Line-3 and Line-5’s planned routes, so more notices for the remaining portions in addition to notices for Line-4 (Light House – Poonamallee, 25 km) are expected to be published in the coming months.
Phase 2 has been estimated to cost Rs. 85,000 crore and its detailed project report (DPR) is currently being revised to conform with the new Metro Rail Policy of 2017 after which it’ll be placed before the central government’s cabinet for approval. RITES submitted their environmental impact assessment (EIA) report to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in November 2017, but there’s still no clarity on whether they will provide another loan or not.

Do you think phase 2 is economiclly viable because 45k crore phase 1 is used by only 20k people.
Chennai Metro needs a fare correction for Phase 1 and 2 to be successful in any sense.
Phase 1’s route planning is fine, but the fares are just abnormally high. They’re hoping that Phase 1’s upcoming sections will increase ridership but I doubt it’ll have a major impact.
I agree. With Chennai being one of the most cost sensitive cities, it is unlikely that Metro will be a huge hit unless they bring the costs on par with other cities. The Central to Airport line runs almost parallel to suburban rail. The Central – Koyambedu-St. Thomas mount line runs along route which has excellent bus facilities. I doubt these 2 lines will be able to compete with other modes of transport unless they give a huge advantage in terms of time so that a middle-class part of the population will move to metro. I don’t know what the fare structure will look like, but if you extend the existing fares, it is likely that Central to Airport will cost 80 bucks which is prohibitively expensive compared to bus or suburban train!
85k crores is way too high for ph2 of 107.55 km (i.e. almost 800 crs per km). Chennai already has very cheap fares on suburban rail & MRTS & cheapest bus services (though they have been trying to increase fares lately).
If ph1’s record of very poor ridership is anything to go by, their ph2 dream sounds nothing short of a fantasy! Where are they going to secure funds from? Its better they reduce the scope of ph2 & have longer elevated sections. Else they may be saddled with a white elephant for decades!! Its also highly unlikely that CG will approve nor provide any funds for such a bizarre proposal.
As far as I understand, JICA seems to be keen on funding Phase 2. But, unless Central government gives the green signal, JICA cannot come into picture.
Hi TMRG, What about wimco nagar depot construction? to whom CMRL awarded contract? Please update
Hi, not sure who the contract or who’s the lowest bidder (if financial bids have been opened).
Tracking depot work is a little difficult as my friends in the industry have little interest in low value work.
from tondiarpet to wimco nagar, when they will start station design construction. Till now we are not seen any improvement in that stretch it almost four months after the contract awarded. Could you please tell how long it will take for station design contruction?
The tenders called for does not seem to cover the entire Corridor 3 & 5. It seems they are starting works at Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (Corridor 3) and Madhavaram to CMBT (Corridor 5).
The stretch from Sholinganallur to Siruseri SIPCOT (Corridor 3) and CMBT to Sholinganallur (Corridor 5) is NOT covered in the scope of works so far.
Yes, that’s exactly what I’ve written. Tender notices for the rest are still awaited.
Oops! My mistake. Yes, you have indicated that in the article.
maybe it might come along with Line 4 light house poonamallee line
Reg Blue and green line – When v cn expect Central/egmore station to be operational and also opening of AG DMS – Little mount stretch?
When the phase 2 will start from madhavarm to sriseri and how many years it will take to complete the project approximately?
Pls inform Redline Thirumangalam station underground or overhead?
Existing line where will it change to red line to madhavaram
