MMRDA Invites Bids for Mumbai Metro Line-5’s General Consultant

Update – this was awarded to a consortium of Systra – Consulting Engineers Group Ltd – Systra MVA Consulting (India) in August 2019.

Original Post –
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) yesterday invited bids from global engineering and consultancy firms for the appointment of a General Consultant for Mumbai’s new 23.50 km Line-5 connecting Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan. The appointment of a dedicated General Consultant is expected to pave the way for the line’s speedy implementation through assistance in design, supervision, safety, quality control and contract management.

As per MMRDA’s press release

The General Consultants are expected to provide all necessary assistance to MMRDA during tendering and finalization process of the tenders. The scope of work widely includes planning, preliminary design, proof checking of detailed designs, procurement, systems integration, project management, construction/erection supervision, testing and commissioning of the complete Mumbai Metro-5 project.

Line-5 in Mumbai’s north-eastern suburbs was approved by the state government’s cabinet in October 2017 at an estimated cost of Rs. 8,240 crore. The line will be entirely elevated and consist of 16 stations at Kalyan APMC, Kalyan Station, Sahajanand Chowk, Durgadi Fort, Kon Gaon, Gove Gaon MIDC, Rajnouli Village, Temghar, Oswal Wadi, Ganesh Nagar, Anjur Phata, Purna, Kalher, Kasheli, Balkumbh Naka and Kapurbawdi (Thane).

Exact location of the stations and depot haven’t been revealed yet. Here’s a general alignment of the line –

Tender documents for the General Consultant contract go on sale today and the last day to submit bids is May 18 (6 pm).

Back in January 2017, MMRDA invited bids for the 32.32 km Line-4’s General Consultant and immediately followed it up by inviting bids for the line’s civil construction. If that’s anything to go by, then notice inviting bids for Line-5’s construction shouldn’t be too far behind and will not be delayed for a General Consultant to first be appointed.

This is wonderful news. I stay in Kalyan and i cant wait for the work to start on this Line.

I am skeptical about the land acquisition from Kalyan Station to Durgadi Fort. The area is a prime market zone and is always congested with buildings present on the road side with no service road. Will be curious to know the alignment of the stations

I fear that this line will remain as a branch with connectivity just limited to one metro line, that too outside the main city limits and no connections to suburban rail either (similar to green line Delhi metro)

It is difficult, but not impossible, to extend the metro line from Kapurbawdi to Thane Railway Station via Castle Mill, and further to Teen hath Naka. It can be underground if required.

    It will enable:
    1) Bhiwandi-Thane Rly stn.
    2) Line 4 people can reach Thane Stn via Line 5 interchange at Teen Hath Naka.
    3) Since Thane Rly Stn is connected to Navi Mumbai by local trains, it will boost the connectivity.

Also extending line 4 to kashimira will enable Borivali-Thane travel with one interchange at Kashimira (Line 7- Line 4)

I was wondering how good they are announced bid period till May 18(6 pm) . Now these 2 things date & time are pinching me as what MMRDA had earlier announced still till May 22 there’s no update report officially after May 22. Authorities are well aware about that approx 7 kms in Bhiwandi region & 5 kms in Kalyan region will bring challenge for MMRDA as they have to shift the people , land acquisition, funds allocation, destruction of either legal or illegal structures , survey, etc will take huge time easily. Just wanted to see that these all must get commence immediately otherwise fake promise not only hurts, but also bring 🔥 fire in individuals trust which Fadnavis ji n MMRDA must recognise
