TBM Urja Lowered for Bangalore Metro Line-4 at Cantt Station
On Tuesday morning, workers from Larsen & Toubro with help from Barkat Cranes & Equipment began lowering parts of tunnel boring machine DZ670, nicknamed Urja, into the Cantonment Station’s southern launch shaft for constructing tunnels on Bangalore Metro’s 21.386 km Line-4 (Reach 6 / Pink Line) of the 73.92 km Phase 2 project.
This Ø6.67m slurry machine was dispatched from TBM manufacturer China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (CRCHI)’s plant in Changsha back in November 2019 after completing factory acceptance tests (FAT), and arrived in the city in February to build tunnels exclusively on the 2.884 km package RT-03 (Shivaji Nagar Station – Tannery Road).
Per the tunneling plan – this CRCHI TBM, supported locally by Friends Equipment, will first be commissioned southward to build the down-line tunnel towards Shivaji Nagar Station, then brought back to the Cantonment Station for building tunnels towards Pottery Town and Tannery Road stations.

Urja’s sister-machine on RT-03, TBM Vindhya, is on its way to the city as I type this. It arrived at the Chennai Port last week. Per industry sources, TBM Avni’s parts will start getting lowered at Shivaji Nagar Station for RT-02’s tunneling (Shivaji Nagar – Vellara Junction) in “a few more days”.
8:00 pm IST Update: Per another source, L&T “will take a month” to start lowering Avni into Shivaji Nagar Station’s shaft. Whether it’s a few more days or a month, stay tuned to find out!

Yup! Here’s BMRCL’s requirements for each, just to make things clear for everyone
RT-01 (South Ramp – Vellara) awarded to Afcons – 3 TBMs
RT-02 (Tannery Road – North Ramp) awarded to ITD – 2 TBMs
Trying to confirm if they’ll indeed deploy those number of TBMs and their make/models.
