7 Bidders for Kanpur Metro’s Underground Construction

Seven construction firms / consortia have submitted tenders (bids) to build the first package of the 32.385 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project’s 8.621 km underground section, after officials from the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRCL) opened technical bids today afternoon to reveal its list of bidders.

Excluding the ramp, this package (KNPCC-05) of the 23.785 km Line-1 connecting IIT Kanpur – Naubasta has a length of 3619 meters and includes four stations at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj – each 215 meters long.

UPMRC had invited tenders for this package on July 6, 2020 with an estimate of Rs 1400 crore and expects the assigned contractor to complete work in 36 months.

Bidders:

  • Afcons Infrastructure
  • Doğuş Construction
  • JMC – CAI JV
  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T)
  • Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co. Ltd. (STEC)
  • Sam India – Gulermak JV
  • Tata Projects Ltd. (TPL)

Tender No: UPMRC/CE-Contract/KNPRCC-05/2020

Package: KNPCC-05

Scope: Design and Construction of Tunnel from start of elevated ramp (after Motijheel Station) to end of Nayaganj station including four underground metro stations (viz. Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj) and ramp including Architectureal finishes, E&M, TVS, ECS etc. on Corridor-1 of Kanpur MRTS Project at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India

The bids have now been sent for technical evaluation which can take a couple months to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor for this package’s construction.

Approximate tunnel drive lengths:

  • Ramp to tunnel’s start (shaft): unknown
  • Shaft – Chunniganj Station: 504 meters
  • Chunniganj Station – Naveen Market Station: 750 meters
  • Naveen Market Station – Bada Chauraha Station: 515 meters
  • Bada Chauraha Station – Nayaganj Station: 990 meters

As shared earlier, this section of the Line-1 will be partly financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) through a €650 million (approx. Rs. 5406.50 crore) loan. The next underground package, south-east of KNPCC-05, will be roughly 4.5 km long and consist of another 4 stations planned to be named as Birhana Road, Norona Crossing Sagar Market, Kanpur Central Railway Station and ISBT Jhakarkatti. That section’s tender notice inviting bids is pending.

Very sorry to say but it is truth, Metro is useless in Kanpur. People are not traveling in Lucknow metro & you expect in Kanpur. Just waste of money by Govt.
    Without studying. Political venture.

It’s totally waste of money on metro instead of government should try to establish new or open old closed factories so that many unemployed people get the job.

Even people also don’t use metro in jaipur ..they are expanding metro network in different cities to tell the people that worked really hard for development but they are only increasing public debt.
Instead of expanding metro network they can work on tourism sector as we don’t have good tourism sector except varanasi.
They can build international level hospital and University like DU, so we don’t have to go other states for medical treatment and education.

Great to see some move on improving public transport. Once Kanpur and Lucknow metros are in place, it would make a lot of sense to connect the two through Unnao. Expanding it into Kanpur Dehat should also be thought of. Wonderful. Fed up of unruly tempos.

Its a totally useless project that is bound to fail for many reasons. For instance, just look at the distance between metro stations in Phase 1: hardly 1 km. Having lived there for 20 years I can confidently say Kanprites are not going to take the pain of taking the metro just to cover that short distance. And forget that, I don’t think Govt. has a proper systematic plan in place for smooth implementation of this project.
My house is located at benajhabar road and the metro is planned to go underground between Motijheel and Chunniganj which essentially means it tunnel down likely in front of my house. The construction (or I should rather call destruction) guys have literally disrupted the entire road which is the one of the main roads of Kanpur city. They also damaged our drainage/sever lines that goes across the road and meets the chamber on the other end of the road. Despite multiple humble requests from me and my father, they ran the JCB over it causing damages. Initially they promised to repair but later didn’t and just covered it with mud. Now its highly likely that the sever line will get blocked someday.
I am highly upset with the way of working.
