4 Bidders for 2365 KM High Speed Rail Projects’ Survey Work

Four engineering firms today submitted bids for carrying out survey work to help develop individual Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for approx. 2365 km of new High-Speed Rail lines in India.

The 2365 km figure includes the following 4 lines:

India’s National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) had invited bids for this mega survey-package, along with another one that deals with traffic / ridership studies, in early-December with a 180 day completion period.

  • Pioneer Infra Consultants Pvt. Ltd.
  • Subudhi Techno Engineers Pvt. Ltd.
  • TPF Engineering Pvt. Ltd.

Scope: Data Collection and Associated Survey Work for DPR of Various HSR Corridors (Approx. 2365 kms long)

The bids have now been sent for technical evaluation which can take up to a month to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor for this service.

Scope of Work

The Contractor is required to prepare a report containing details of data collected from various departments / site. This will involve the following steps, applicable separately for each corridor:

  • Identification of Crossings (existing & proposed) on the proposed HSR alignment/ROW including but not limited to Roads, Railways, Rivers, Canals etc.
  • Identification of Heritage structures infringing on the proposed HSR  alignment/ROW such as Historical monuments, tombs, ASI sites and Religious structures such as Temple, Gurudwaras, Mosque, Church etc. and any other important structures.
  • Preparation of Auto CAD drawings of the ROW with details as per S.no. 1-2 above plotted on the drawings. The Auto CAD drawings shall have different layers for different entities like Roads, Railways, Spot/Ground levels, Drain, Building, Boundary Wall, Over Ground Utility as instructed by Employer. X, Y, Z co-ordinates of all spot/ground points shall be provided in CSV file with point numbers and feature coding. Z co-ordinates are to be taken with due care and indicated accordingly.
  • Collection of Hydrological Data for all rivers, streams etc. crossing the proposed HSR alignment/ROW. The data shall include but not limited to H.F.L., Rainfall data, discharge etc. The data shall also be collected in respect of nearby existing bridges including bridge length, span arrangement etc. In case of any dams nearby, the relevant data of the dam shall also be collected.
  • Collection of Geotechnical Data from the concerned authorities for the work executed for existing/proposed/under-construction bridges, viaduct etc. in vicinity of the proposed HSR alignment. The data shall include but not limited to Borelogs, lab test results, in-situ test reports, interpretative reports etc.
  • Collection of Topo-sheets, Geological Maps, GADs of existing/proposed/under-construction bridges from the concerned departments.
  • Collection of future plans for roads (2-lane and above), Indian Railways, DFCCIL, Inland Waterways etc.
  • Collection of Data required for preparation of Cost Estimate of the HSR project including source of construction material etc.
  • Any other details which the Contractor may feel important and or as instructed by Employer.

The bid submission deadline for the traffic (ridership) study tender for these 4 corridors was earlier scheduled on January 4, but has been pushed to January 14. If they don’t extend the date out further, I should have a post with a list of bidders for that tender on January 15 when technical bids are opened.

    I’m disappointed after the railway board chairman said that not all these corridors will be HSR instead some will be semi HSR. Insted of spending on Semi HSR corridor they can rather improve the already existing indian railways tracks to support semi HSR speeds.

      Existing tracks suffer from legacy issues which hinder their upgradation to semi-high speed and high speed tracks. A lot of them has level crossings, lower axle load. Heck a lot of them pass through heavily populated areas, with neighbouring land encroached

      For achieving high speeds and semi-high speeds, ultra modern signalling systems are needed to installed there. The problem is that the existing signalling system is so old that any drastic upgrade is not possible without modifying existing signalling equipments(points, axle counters, Signals). The current signalling system can only be upgraded to support maximum speeds of 160 kmph, which is currently Railway is doing. We can’t upgrade them to support maximum speeds of 250-450 kmph.

      If you see, this is an upgrade to the existing Railway system only.

      Just like mobile was an upgrade to land line 15-20 years back, the HSR is an upgrade to the existing railway. The Landline was a messy system, and calling a STD using the Landline is still God’s blessing, lines are always busy.

      Every system has a lifetime, the old fashioned rail can’t compete or do the needful for the 1.3 billion people. We need better technology. The HSR is almost 10 times efficient then the traditional rail. We can burn money in the railway to maybe just double the efficiency, nothing more then that, as that is the limit of that system.

      Think about China’s HSR network, if we want to compete with them, we need the right tolls at least.

    It’s good to see that Our Central Govt. Is actively working to expand India’s HSR Network but with overall 7,000 kms. It’s still not enough. We need more lines to compete with China. I think some International High Speed Rail lines may also work. Such as Howrah to Dhaka, Kanyakumari to Columbo etc

      Between Sri-Lanka, not possible. Terrain doesn’t allow. Plus area is prone to yearly cyclones.

      Bangladesh is too poor to support international high speed network. Their Dhaka Metro Project haven’t taken off completely, despite DMRC acting as a consultant.

        Dhaka Metro Project has taken off but going slowly
        Work on Line 6 from Uttara-Agargaon is almost completed
        Agargaon-Kamalapur has been on for 1 yr now

    New Delhi to Chennai is a prominent route ,HSR in this toute will touch all important cities on the way like, Jhansi, Gwalior,Bhopal Jn,Nagpur Jn,Warangal Jn(Hyderabad is 100km from here), Vijayawada , Nellore, GudurJn( Tirupati is 120kms) and Chennai Egmore. It reduces lot of travel time and even supports other connectivity.

    One HSR should connect Howrah(Kolkata) -Silliguri-Guwahati and then branch lines to Silchar, Dibrugarh,Imphal, Agartala,Aizawl and other places.But Guwahati should have a HSR
    Another HSR should be Kolkata-Bhubaneswar-Vizag-Vijaywada-Chennai-Madurai-Kochi

    Chennai-Mysuru HSR should be extended to Mangalore
    Kerala’s K-Rail Silver Line should be extended from Kasaragod to Mangalore to have an interchange with the HSR

      I agree, Chennai-Mysore line should be extended to Mangalore. Mangalore is a very important city with international airport and sea port and it’s educational hub with fantastic hospitals and medical colleges.
