TBM S-1074 Lowered into Mumbai Metro’s Nayanagar Shaft

Towards the end of October, workers from the CEC-ITD Cem-TPL JV lowered S-1074 – their second Ø6.61m Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM) into the Nayanagar Shaft in Mahim for constructing a part of Mumbai Metro’s new 33.5 km Line-3’s tunnels.

This Ø6.61m Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine passed FAT in mid-August and arrived at the city’s port in early October. Inside the shaft, it now sits right next to its sister machine – TBM S-1073 – which was lowered into the shaft in mid-September. That TBM will in fact begin its initial drive towards Shitladevi Station today (November 6).

After assembly is completed, S-1074 on its first assignment will excavate and build the 2484m long down-line tunnel towards Dadar Station, through Shitladevi Station, as part of the 6.081 km package UGC-04 between Worli-Dharavi. After that, it’s planned to be brought back to the shaft for its final 578m drive towards Dharavi Station on the up-line.
