Bids Invited for Kolkata Metro’s Underground Work to Birati

Kolkata Metro’s Principal Chief Engineer this week invited tenders (bids) for the civil construction contract of 6.87 km Kolkata Metro Line-4’s underground extension from Biman Bandar (Kolkata Airport) to Birati.

This contract is part of the Metro Yellow Line’s 11.26 km extension to Barasat in north-east Kolkata. Its scope includes construction of a 3.59 km metro tunnel, 1 underground metro station building at Birati, and subway work for Birati and Michael Nagar stations.

The metro tunnel along Kolkata Airport’s boundary wall will be constructed by RCC box pushing method (no tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will be deployed), while Birati station will be constructed using the cut & cover method.

This development comes right after Airports Authority of India (AAI) provided its no-objection approval to allow metro construction work using 18m tall cranes in and around Kolkata Airport’s vicinity.

Brief Scope: Design, Procurement & Construction of RCC Box Metro tunnel including Birati UG Station Building & Subways (with Entry-Exit Structures) for two underground Metro Stations (Birati & Michael Nagar) by Cut & Cover Method (Top Down with Diaphragm Wall/ Bottom Up Method with support arrangement) including architectural finishing, firefighting, water supply, sanitary installation, drainage & BLT works, E&M service, ECS service, TVS services, power supply system with 750 V DC traction system including composite aluminium Third Rail from Ch: 6.250 Km to Ch: 9.840 Km including all ancillary works in connection with extension of Metro Railway from Noapara to Barasat via Bimanbandar

Interestingly, the tender’s scope also includes all systems work within the 3.59 km tunnel – from track to E&M to tunnel ventilation to 750 V DC Third Rail installation works. Typically those are part of multiple separate packages.

This is a contract re-tender. Back in March 2022, Senbo Engineering was declared as the lowest bidder for 2 underground civil packages, but I don’t believe a contract was ever awarded due to pending approvals.
