17 Firms Qualify for Ayodhya Bypass’ Two Construction Contracts

Seventeen civil engineering firms have qualified for the construction work of 67.57 km long Ayodhya Bypass project on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) after National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) completed technical bid evaluation on Thursday.

This four-six lane expressway consists of 2 packages – 35.40 km Northern Ayodhya Bypass (Package 1) and 32.172 km Southern Ayodhya Bypass (Package 2). Both packages along with a small portion of the operational NH-27 will essentially form a ring road around Ayodhya & Faizabad cities connecting the districts of Lucknow, Basti, and Gonda.

NHAI had invited bids for both packages all the way back in December 2022 with a 2.5 year construction deadline. Technical bids were opened in February 2024 to reveal 16 firms had bid for each package, and evaluation was completed this Thursday.

Indicative alignment of Ayodhya Bypass in Red – via the government’s PIB release

Financial bids are planned to be opened on Tuesday unless the sole disqualified bidder (VRC Constructions) challenges their disqualification and drags the tendering process into oblivion.

Ayodhya Bypass Project was evaluated by India’s Network Planning Group (NPG) in January 2024. Per the government’s PIB press release, “Ayodhya is situated between two economic hubs (Lucknow and Gorakhpur) and major commodities such as leather, engineering goods, building materials, iron and steel, etc. pass through the city therefore the construction of this bypass route will facilitate uninterrupted freight flows and decongest the city.

This bypass which is expected to cater to multiple forecasted increase in passenger and freight vehicle movement (from 89,023 in 2023 and 216,928 in 2033) around eight influence areas around Ayodhya, will also enable seamless movement of people and goods, and reduced travel time to critical national highways (such as NH-27: Lucknow– Ayodhya -Gorakhpur; NH-330A: Raebareli -Ayodhya; NH-330: Sultanpur-Ayodhya-Gonda and NH-135A: Akbarpur -Ayodhya).
