Arun Soil Lab Awarded Lucknow Metro Line-2’s Geotechnical Contract LKGS-01
Arun Soil Lab Pvt. Ltd. on Thursday was awarded a Rs. 58.76 lakh contract to conduct geotechnical soil investigation for 11.165 km Lucknow Metro Phase 1B project which will connect Charbagh Railway Station and Vasant Kunj with 12 stations.
Package LKGS-01 is the second contract after topographical contract LKTS-01 (awarded to Epitome Geotechnical Services) for developing Lucknow Metro’s east-west Line-2 which will run through old Lucknow.
The objective of this geotechnical investigation is to have sufficient data on the sub-soil to assist with preparing detailed design of structures, and use appropriate machinery, methods & technology during construction. This will also help ensure least possible damage to existing structures during the construction phase.
Per Phase 1B’s Detailed Project Report (DPR), Lucknow’s Line-2 will have an approximate elevated length of 4.286 km with 5 stations between Vasant Kunj – Thakurganj, and an underground length of 6.879 km with 7 stations between Charbagh – Niwazganj.
UPMRC had invited bids for its geotechnical investigation in August 2024 with a Rs. 77.21 lakh estimate and 90 day deadline. Technical bids were opened in October 2024 to reveal 11 bidders out of which 6 firms were disqualified.
Financial bids of the 5 qualified firms were opened on Wednesday. Interestingly, S & R Geotechniques and CEG Test House submitted identical bids down to the paisa at Rs. 74,80,179.72.

UPMRC’s Brief Scope: Detailed Geo-Technical Survey of East-West Corridor (Charbagh to Vasantkunj) including Depot at Hardoi Road for Lucknow Metro Rail Project Phase 1B
Lucknow Metro’s Phase 1B was approved for construction by Uttar Pradesh’s government in January 2024 with an estimated cost of Rs. 5801.05 crore. It’s currently awaiting approval from the Central Government’s Public Investment Board (PIB) within the Finance Ministry.
This geotechnical investigation is one of the several steps UPMRC has to take prior to construction which I reckon will not start until at least Q2 2026.

So with they are almost getting done with the OG 3 projects of lucknow, kanpur and agra. Do you think they and Government of UP will move forward with other projects like meerut line 2, prayagraj, gorakhpur? Also do you think varanasi will get something in future as they have already received ropeway and it’s construction caused quite major disruption in the city even for just a few poles. In case of metro (lite?) half of the city will be absolutely torn apart. Is the metro news more of a candy than reality for them?
Better to concentrate on their biggest cities (Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida) rather than trying to get a metro line in each city. Having a couple cities with many metro lines each is way better than 1 or 2 in each city.
I don’t believe any of those metro or metrolite/LRT projects will take off – at least for the next 10 years. And I really hope it stays that way.
Hope they can focus on fixing the basics – sidewalks, intersections and road-width to improve throughput. A well run bus system is needed in all these towns instead of sexier transit.
In Lucknow, if Govt. extends metro line from Indira Nagar metro station towards Gomti Nagar, then it will be very beneficial for the residents of a very big colony. This colony is only 3-4 kms. away from Indira Nagar metro station.
