L&T Begins Construction for Ahmedabad Metro’s TBM Launch Shaft

Construction has started for India’s 8th underground metro project! 🙂

Workers from Larsen & Toubro earlier this month began construction work to build a shallow guide-wall for a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) launch shaft adjacent to Kalupur Railway Station on Ahmedabad Metro’s 20.737 km east-west line connecting Vastral Gam with Thaltej Gam.

Two refurbished Terratec machines, which recently saw action to build Delhi Metro’s Pink Line (from either CC-20 or CC-24), will be lowered and commissioned from this shaft in mid-2018 to build the line’s tunnels as part of a Rs. 901 crore contract for the 4.378 km underground Package-2 which got awarded to Larsen & Toubro in January 2017. Their scope of work involves the construction of twin tunnels from the Kalupur Railway Station to the West Ramp through 2 underground stations at Ghee Kanta and Shahpur.

The shaft’s site at Kalupur is sandwiched between platform #12 and RC Technical Institute. The adjacent station’s construction is part of the 2.446 km Package-1 (Kalupur Railway Station – East Ramp) which was awarded to Afcons Infrastructure also in January 2017. The site for their TBM launch shaft remains unknown at this time.

Here are some images of the TBM shaft’s guide-wall at Kalupur shot earlier this week –

Here’s a nice video which briefly touches the topic of guide-walls between the 30-60 seconds mark, prior to the commencement of piling work for the shaft’s diaphragm wall –

Do you mean launching TBM will take another year?

Hi, the 1st TBM is easily 9-12 months away from starting.

Each metro project’s challenges and motivation are different, but to give you an idea from recent projects:
      • Lucknow’s shaft work started in July 2016 and the 1st TBM was commissioned in January 2017. Work here has been rapid and I consider it to be an outlier.
      • Mumbai’s shaft work at different sites started in November 2016 and the 1st TBM is expected to be commissioned in October 2017.

Oh i didn’t know it takes this much time. Thanks for information. Going by this the Thaltej – Vastral route is easily 5 years away from becoming operational.

The other route is entirely elevated and may go operational before.
