Soma Wins Bangalore Metro’s Pattanagere – Challegatta Contract

Soma Enterprise Limited has been awarded the Reach 2B contract for constructing the 4.869 km elevated stretch from Pattanagere to Challegatta for Bangalore Metro’s Phase 2 project! This information was revealed yesterday by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.’s GM of Finance via twitter and is the 3rd major civil construction contract to be awarded so far.

The BMRCL had invited tenders for the construction of this section in May 2015 and estimated it to cost Rs. 308.49 crores. This section starts from the southern end of the upcoming Pattanagere station, includes 2 new stations at Mailasandra & Kengeri, and finally terminates at the mouth of the new Challegatta Depot which will serve as the Purple line’s second depot in addition to the existing Baiyappanahalli Depot. As per the tender notice, Soma Enterprise will have 27 months to complete all civil works.

This section, along with the 3.945 km Reach 2A from Mysore Road to Pattanagere station, is part of the Purple line’s 8.814 km extension from Mysore Road station towards Kengeri. Here’s a map which displays both Reach 2A and Reach 2B:

With this, 3 contracts of 2 elevated sections of Phase 2 have now been awarded. In chronological order:

Purple line – 3.945 km Reach 2A between Mysore Road & Pattanagere to IL&FS Engineering Ltd. – view details
Green line – 6.290 km Reach 4B between Puttenahalli & Anjanapura to NCC Ltd. – view details
Purple line – 4.869 km Reach 2B between Pattanagere & Challegatta to Soma Enterprise Ltd.

This represents roughly 21% of all construction that will be carried out in Phase 2.  For a list of all the extensions and new lines planned in the 72.1 km Phase 2 project, please see: Bangalore Metro Phase 2 Information and Map.

Tenders for the construction of other sections of Phase 2, such as the 15.50 km Baiyappanahalli – Whitefield extension or the mostly underground 21.25 km Gottigere – Nagavara line are expected to be invited in the 2nd half of this year after which the contracts will take 6-9 months to be awarded.

Besides pushing contractors and their subcontractors to get Phase 1’s underground work completed (see 21 brilliant new images), the BMRCL these days has been busy with tasks to acquire land, issue demolition contracts and secure funding from external agencies for Phase 2. A recent meeting between the BMRCL and locals to discuss the permission granted by the BBMP for cutting trees on Mysore Road (Reach 2A & 2B) and Kanakapura road (Reach 4B) not only failed like the previous 2 times, but turned into a shouting match with extremely juvenile arguments & comments. Without the approval to cut trees, the BMRCL’s contractors cannot begin full fledged work along their mandated sections and will have to until the next meeting is successful.

Green line’s Reach 3C between Hesaraghatta – BIEC (3.032 km) would be next. BMRCL recently invited tenders for demolition of structures along its route.

BMRCL is yet to invite civil construction tenders. The entire bidding process can take 6-9 months, so I expect contracts to be given only in 2017.

The way they’re going, I expect it to be ready by 2023. Originally, tenders (bids) for all contracts were to be invited in FY 2013-14 & FY 2014-15, but so far they’ve only invited tenders for 3 civil contracts.

Is there any chance where a metro station can come up attaching to the challaghatta depot? It will help people around KG Layout and as well as apartments on the Mysore road line?

I don’t have access to the detailed design, but I’m sure the BMRCL & its Detailed Design Consultant would have designed the line in such a way so that it can be extended further south along Mysore Road. Keeping that in mind, a station close to Challaghatta can be expected in the future phases.
