[Pics] CMRS Inspects Bangalore Metro’s EW Underground Section

The Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety, SK Mittal, and his team from the Southern Railway yesterday kick-started a 3-day safety inspection of Bangalore Metro’s 4.8 km east-west underground section between MG Road & Magadi Road! In order to do this, the BMRCL curtailed operations on the Purple line’s Reach 1 (Baiyappanahalli – MG Road), Reach 2 (Magadi Road – Mysore Road), and completely shut down the MG Road and Magadi Road stations which lie on either side of the underground section. More details on that can be read here.

Tunneling work for this section under contract UG-2 was awarded to the CEC-SOMA-CICI JV in March 2010 and got completed in March 2014. Following that, trial runs began (see images) in November 2015.

Although the inspection is scheduled to end on Thursday, the CMRS could take additional time to complete it. Once done, the CMRS is expected to submit a report within 7 days with its decision and any suggestions on how to safely operate metro services. After that, the opening of this section for commercial services would depend on how quickly the BMRCL can finish pending work at Majestic and the availability of ministers to attend the inauguration event.

Pleasing to see this! We can hope for a quick opening of this short line by this month. I am due to arrive to Bangalore next week for my summer vacations and utilise the line by getting down at Cubbon Park and watching matches at the stadium. Let’s hope atleast the Green Line southern branch quickly opens up for services asap! =D
