Haryana Appoints DMRC to Conduct Feasibility for 3 New Metro Lines

After a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the Haryana government has appointed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to conduct a study and prepare a techno-economic feasibility report (TEFR) for 3 new metro lines in the state! This news comes just in time for the inclusion of new lines in the Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 project which is currently in the planning stage and awaiting a final approval from the Delhi Government for the Delhi-based lines.

The 3 proposed lines include:

  1. Narela – Kundli
  2. HUDA City Center – Old Gurgaon
  3. HUDA City Center – Old Faridabad

These are in addition to the proposed Dwarka-Gurgaon metro line (extension of Blue/Airport line) for which the DMRC was appointed to prepare a TEFR in February 2016. As per the TOI, the TEFR for the 3 new lines are expected to be ready by September following which a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared.

As per a Haryana govt. official:

The DMRC has been asked to let us know the feasibility of these three routes. Once the feasibility report is prepared, the next step will be to prepare the DPR in which the station’s location, design, ridership, cost, utilities, electrical and several other components will be factored in. Then, after the DPR is approved by the state government, it will be sent to the ministry of urban development for approval.

If these lines were to be built, then the Narela-Kundli line would be an elevated extension of the Red Line which is planned to be extended to Narela in Phase 4. This area in my opinion would be better served by an extension of the Yellow line. I envision the other two proposed lines to be one continuous line between Old Gurgaon – HUDA City Center – Old Faridabad with a mix of elevated & underground sections.

Here’s what their alignment could possibly look like in Black. You can zoom in/out to view specific areas.

There’s a long way to go before the DPR for these lines are prepared and approved, but this appointment at least sets the ball rolling for new metro corridors that people in Kundli, Gurgaon & Faridabad desperately need.

Since my commute takes me to Kundli and beyond, I do hope this sees the light of day.

IMO extending the yellow line through Alipur and along NH1 doesn’t make much sense because those areas are mostly agricultural and sparsely populated, while Narela to Kundli is denser. But I’d like to hear your reasons for picking yellow line over red line – are you thinking of some other routing?

Hi, In my social media interaction with metro users in Narela who saw my recent Phase 4 posts, they were quite vocal about having a direct route to central Delhi via the Yellow Line than be forced to take a longer circuitous route (increasing travel time) and switch lines to get to their destination. They currently take suburban EMUs to Badli and would rather continue doing that than go via Rohini.

The proposed Dwarka-Prem Piao line ends in the middle of nowhere. I’d prefer if they extend that onward to Bawana-Narela-Kundli and have the Yellow Line connect with it at Narela.

The use of heavy yellow color for metro lines and for expressways is confusing.

It bothers me as well. But the use of any lighter shade of yellow becomes too bright. I’ll dabble with it.

Hopefully it actually happens this time – the first two make sense but the Faridabad link seems like a bit of a stretch. Here’s what I’d hope for Ph IV for Gurgaon: https://drive.google.com/open?id=16KOwIGmHyVFxsa8q_CiPAXt0ses&usp=sharing

Good job there! Gurgaon really missed out in Phase 3, so I hope more lines get pushed through the pipeline. Instead of a Gurgaon-Faridabad connection, more intra city lines would be nice to have

Why is the Airport Express Line not being considered for extension through Gurgaon to Faridabad. It will provide a fast link between Gurgaon and Faridabad, which is the need of the day and also offer fast links from both Faridabad and Gurgaon to the Airport, which can reduce a great deal of traffic on the critical section of NH8. The area betweeen Gurgaon and Faridabad is not so densely populated and a fast train with few stops in between will serve all very well.

Hi, let’s see what the feasibility report says. Perhaps the Airport Express Line would be recommended to go to Faridabad and positioned for an onward extension to Gr. Noida? Perhaps a line between them is not recommended at all at this stage? Let’s wait & see.

Are you referring to the Hindustan Times? The author of that article has incorrectly reported the news. I’ve shared official circulars & alignments on Phase 4’s proposed lines and the Janakpuri-Mukundpur/Azadpur line is no longer on the table.

Hey TMRG, can u tell me one thing. Since the AAP govt came to power last year, had they done a single thing for the delhi metro. I hear news all the time that phase 4 is delayed by delhi govt., the airport to greater noida link will not be financed by delhi govt, the slums are not beinh removed by delhi govt. What they have done for the metro despite being a 50% owner. I believe they will surely do one thing. Protest against the centre when the metro fares will increase in the coming months. And the congress will join them too.

You know, I haven’t come across any positive or timely move by them as far as the metro’s development goes. Last heard, their MLAs wanted to bring about changes to Phase 4 plans (see this article). Route planning should best be left to the DMRC to decide, but their hands are tied.

Hey what u were saying about ..Dwarka.Prem_piao line..I think U were talking about dwarka-najafgarh line instead……
BTW is Dwaraka Kanjhawla ..Route is on the cards…

U r absolutely right. Route planning should be made by DMRC as they make decisions based on socio economic factors and it used to happen before. But nowadays, the kind of politics that is going in delhi has effected the metro as well. The changes that the aap govt wants in routes of phase 4 are purely politically motivated to secure votebank for elections. The dwarka- prem piao line and the rithala narela line will be loss making routes. And i m so disappointed they removed janakpuri mukundpur stretch from phase 4. That would have been a profitable one and also decongested the outer ring road.

Nothing will happen. The government is least concerned about the plight of the people of Old Gurgaon especially located in Sector 21, 22 , 23 and near Kapashera. The roads are bad. The traffic gets worse.
For the government the millennium city is the DLF side of the Gurgaon and not this side.
This proposed route between Dwarka Sector 21 to Iffco Chowk will never come up via Kapashera, Udyog Vihar and Maruti etc. The government does not want to have any kind of development on this stretch and only wants to develop the DLF side of the Gurgaon. I doubt this project will ever take off.. and the builder lobby will never want this area of Gurgaon to develop more as compared to the DLF side of the Gurgaon.

Hi TMRG hope you would have gone through various articles on Old Gurugram extension, below is the link to one of the article http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/metro-to-link-old-new-gurugram/article19244052.ece
What is the expected timeline for this & will this be part of DMRC Phase IV or it would go beyond…

    • TMRG says:

Timeline depends on if and when Haryana govt approves the project. I’ve seen so many proposals over the past 5-7 years, but none have been approved so far.

If they approve it within the next 5 years, then it’ll get included in the Phase 4 category.
