Pier Work Begins for Bangalore Metro’s Anjanapura Extension

Just a month after pier work started for Bangalore Metro Purple Line’s 8.814 km Challegatta extension, now pier work has started on Kanakapura Road for constructing the 6.29 km southern extension of the Green Line to Anjanapura! The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. had invited bids for constructing this ‘Reach 4B’ section of the Phase 2 project in February 2015 and then awarded a Rs 508.86 crore contract to NCC Ltd. in January 2016 after which barricading works on different parts of the stretch began in April.

TMRG reader Prasanna Hegde spotted the first few piers taking shape close to Adyar Anand Bhavan (A2B) between the upcoming Krishna Leela Park & Vajrahalli stations.

Next steps: More rebar will be used to tie the existing rebar horizontally (see example). Once done, formwork (see example) will be brought in to facilitate a concrete pour and mold the piers into the desired shape.

The BMRCL is yet to convince locals and secure approals for cutting down trees on this stretch. The last meeting to resolve this dispute was held at Jayanagar in March, but didn’t end favorably for the BMRCL. Since then, the Urban Development Department has constituted a ‘tree committee’ to overlook all issues, whether to cut or replant trees, and their decision will be treated as final. Within the coming weeks, they are expected to submit a report on the BMRCL’s tree plantation claims for Phase 1 and also vet the BMRCL’s proposal for cutting 311 trees on Kanakapura Road & Mysore Road.

Here’s to hoping for the best 🙂

They should be prioritizing on the Whitfield first as it is hub of major tech parks.
Also TMRG, I have heard that they have decided upon a new line from silkboard to KR Puram in Phase 2 itself??

I really wish they did that. But according to the CPRO, work on the whitefield stretch has already started :/ What a shameless lie. Forget the line’s construction, they just re-invited bids for road widening works as they realized it didn’t conform with the BBMP’s drain requirements. As thing stand right now, if they were to invite construction bids today – then work will only start in Q4 2017. While others (eg Lucknow, Nagpur) are taking 5-7 months to conclude the bidding process, they’ve so far taken an avg of 10 months.

TMRG, Vasanth Rao is GM (Finance) doubling up as CPRO & providing response on twitter. Agreed he does not keep himself updated with status of actual physical construction of the new lines & resorts to generalizations like “work has started”. Going by the twitter chain, he initially said “Final notification u/s 28(4) has been issued for all lands in R1 Extn. Payment of compensation is under progress”. So, it seems like what he meant to say was that this was also part of the “work” related to the line. I feel such utterances can be overlooked as it isn’t something deliberately misleading.

Hi, on the contrary, he does know the status & requirements of various works, big or small, be it cross-passage works on the Green Line’s tunnels or the trial trench work carried out by the BMRCL’s team at Electronics City for the new RV Rd-Bommasandra line.

For the layman, work = construction. The user specifically asked “when can we expect work to begin?” after establishing the fact that land acquisition is in progress. Both the CPRO & the MD have quite a history of deliberately misleading the public as far as timings or work status are concerned – this isn’t a one-off tweet.

    TMRG,

I think there are machines which can relocate the same tree to a different place hassle free.
BMRCL should look in to this.

Would be nice if they did. They just procured one such machine in Ahmedabad and I’ve seen relocation activity in Chennai back in 2011.

When are starting the underground work, Since UnderGround tunneling takes more time , In Phase 1 also they made the same mistake and Phase 2 also it seems among all the sections UnderGround section will be last to start . The way its progressing i don’t think Phase 2 will be complete before 2023.

I went past this stretch lately, construction seems to be on full fledge, so we could expect this stretch to open according to the time set by you, TMRG. However, the traffic and work make the area chaotic and extremely hard to traverse through. And quite a few trees have been axed. I wouldn’t want to put a number though.

I understand that Whitefield area is the tech hub. I work there. But I think it is equally important to connect other areas of Bangalore. it makes sense to continue making progress where land has already been acquired.

Good to see that Metro Green line extension on Kanakapura is going on full speed. Road widening is on. Hope they will also provide adequate space for foot paths and padestrian crossings. . Somehow in all road projects they forget them.
