Bombardier Delivers First of 162 New Coaches to Delhi Metro
On September 21, Bombardier Transportation held a small ceremony at the InnoTrans 2016 Conference in Berlin, Germany to commemorate the delivery of the 1st new MOVIA coach of a 162 coach order to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. This order is part of package RS-11 for which the DMRC in July 2014 invited tenders to add additional trains and convert some of the last remaining 6-coach MOVIA trains into 8-coach formations. In mid-2015, Bombardier emerged as the sole technically qualified bidder (no surprise) and went on to be awarded a Rs. 1497.98 crore contract.
The new coaches from RS-11 will increase DMRC’s Bombardier fleet from 614 to 776 coaches and make it one of the largest Bombardier metro fleets in the world. Deliveries from Bombardier’s Savli plant in Gujarat were promised to start in Q3 2016 and are right on schedule. The last coach from the order is expected to be delivered by early-2018.
Bombardier has in the past fulfilled 3 major DMRC orders. Here’s a list of all orders along with the order month & year.
• RS-2: 340 (July 2007) + option of additional 84 (March 2008)
• RS-5: 74 (June 2010) + option of additional 40 (July 2010)
• RS-7: 76 (September 2011)
• RS-11: 162 (June 2015)
Total= 776 Coaches
The new coaches will be pushed into service on the Yellow (Line-2) and Blue (Line-3, Line-4) lines after undergoing intensive testing and will add much needed capacity in light of the delays being faced in Phase 3’s construction. As per the DMRC’s Rolling Stock Director, HS Anand:
These new cars are being procured by Delhi Metro for services on its presently operational red, blue and yellow lines. These cars will be put into service in a phased manner after the mandatory tests and trials. The addition of these cars will go a long way in providing safe and comfortable travel to our valued commuters.

So by 2018, all trains on yellow and blue lines would have 8 coaches?
12 train-sets will be left with 6-coaches. Both lines have 73 6-coach trains and 61 of those are planned to be converted from this and BEML’s order for 96 new coaches (RS-13). Check out this press release for a breakdown.

any news on Delhi phase 3 dmrc recently revised trial run deadline to December for janakpuri to botanical garden n for pink line dey have not disclosed anything strange
Trial runs will be extended to Botanical Garden very soon after which services between Kalkaji-Botanical Garden can be expected to start in mid-2017.
In the post you wrote that these new Bombardier trains will be used on only the Yellow and Blue lines. But as per DMRC’s rolling stock director’s statement, the trains will be used on the Red line as well. Please clear the confusion in this regard. Currently only the Hyundai rotem trains are servicing the Red line.
Hi, Bombardier’s trains are and will be used only for the Yellow & Blue lines. The LOA for this order and another 96 coach (RS-13) order to BEML were given within 3 weeks of each other to add capacity across the Red-Yellow-Blue lines, so perhaps he was talking about the grand scheme of things.

In today’s HT,it’s a news that trial will commence on kalindikunj-botanical strech from 25 oct.
But when will whole line trial begin,god knows as DMRC is repeatedly missing deadline and disguising people.
That’s excellent – looking forward to it. The rest of the line (entirely underground) will take some more time and I’m looking at a mid-2018 opening as there’s one last TBM breakthrough pending between Vasant Vihar and Munirka stations.

wat about pink line ashram – vinobhapuri tunnel update, when breakthrough is expected?
Supposed to take place soon. One of the TBMs has reached the Vinobhapuri station but the base slab (where the TBM will be placed post-breakthrough) is not yet ready. I’m eagerly waiting for this development.
At least dmrc can extend trial run to hauz khas for magenta line it will bring huge time saving and convenient for south Delhi ppl
That would be nice, but the last couple of TBM breakthroughs on the Kalkaji-Hauz Khas section took place just 5 months ago (Eg. S890 at GK, S723 at Nehru Place) and it takes time to dismantle them, clean up the tunnels and perform the remaining activities of laying the track-bed and installing the track, signalling, telecom etc. I don’t expect trials here to begin before June 2017.
Why are there no Bombardier trains running on the red line? This time too, there was no order for Bombardier trains for the Red line. Is there any technical issue?
I believe it’s related to maintenance. It’s usually good practice to concentrate a certain type/batch of trains on one line than to spread them out across multiple lines. Sort of similar to how Indigo Airlines only operates A320s or Southwest Airlines operates B737s to keep training & maintenance costs low.
What is current status of munirka-vasant vihar shaft.I read that dmrc is planning to conduct special trial for igi domestic- janakpuri west by lauching trains at palam station ramp.

The DMRC has started adding new Bombarider coaches to make some of the 6 coach trains to eight coach trains recently.
The thing is, Bombardier is supplying 162 new coaches. In this respect, I can’t really calculate how all the trains on the yellow and blue lines will have only the Bombardier rolling stock, especially if you keep in mind the number of 6 and 8 coach BEML Rotem trains on the blue line ?
