Central Govt Approves Pune Metro’s Phase 1 Project
Keeping an eye on the upcoming Pune Municipal Corporation elections, the Central Government’s Cabinet today approved the 31.254 km Pune Metro project comprising of 2 metro lines at a cost of Rs. 11,420 crore. The project was recently approved by the Finance Ministry’s Public Investment Board in October and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been confirmed to visit Pune on December 24 to lay the project’s foundation stone.
The project was originally estimated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to cost Rs 7,984 crore in 2009, but has undergone multiple revisions owing to government delays, red tape and opposition from NGOs. As per the approved funding plan, roughly 50% of the project will be funded by two loans co-financed by the World Bank (WB) & the Asian Infrastructure Investments Bank (AIIB), 20% each will come from the Centre & State governments while the rest 10% will be contributed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) & Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

As per the PIB Notice:
The Project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MAHA-METRO), which will be a 50:50 jointly owned company of Government of India and Government of Maharashtra. Project will be covered under the legal framework of the Metro Railways (Construction of Works) Act, 1978; the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002; and the Railways Act, 1989, as amended from time to time.
The existing Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (NMRCL) which is a joint Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) of Government of India (GoI) and Government of Maharashtra (GoM), would be reconstituted into Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MAHA-METRO) for implementation of all metro projects including Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-1 in the State of Maharashtra outside Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project will benefit from experience and learnings from other Metro Rail projects in Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Nagpur etc.
Next steps include starting land acquisition and inviting bids for both lines’ Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) as well as a General Consultant to manage the project. I expect civil construction bids for the first stretch to be invited in 2018 with construction work starting in late-2018 or 2019.
For more updates, check out the Pune section of The Metro Rail Guy!
Since NMRCL is the implementing agency, it is expected that the GC EOI as well as tenders for DDC of Stations & D&B of Viaducts will be released simultaneously as was the case with Nagpur metro. COnsidering this, you can expect the civil work to start by end of 2017 at the latest.
It’ll be great if the EOI & tenders are expedited. Let’s see what happens.
Congrats to all Punekars. This is #4 for Maharashtra 🙂
Both this map and Wikipedia show Line 2 to intersect with Line 1 at ASI, yet on the your Pune Metro overview page, the list of stations for Line 2 includes PMC but not ASI. That had me mixed up for a bit. I’ve never been to Pune, or India for that matter. But as an urban guy, I appreciate how much a good metro system can do for a city, so I follow along. I just wish someone could do the Chinese metros in English as well as the Indian ones are done here.
Hi, thanks for your message 🙂 Page 29-30 of latest Detailed Project Report indicate PMC as the common station of both lines. I’ve heard about ASI serving as the interchange but this official document shows otherwise.
