Lucknow Metro’s TBM S53 Starts Tunneling towards Hazratganj

The Tata – Gülermak JV yesterday commissioned TBM S53 – their second Tunnel Boring Machine from the Bapu Bhawan Shaft, located adjacent to the Sachivalaya (State Secretariat) Station’s site, for building the up-line tunnel of the 22.878 km north-south line’s 3.44 km underground section.

Parts of this Terratec Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM, nicknamed Ganga after the Ganga River, were lowered into the shaft in January-February. The TBM is currently building temporary rings within the shaft and will first travel northwards on a 780 meter journey towards the Hazratganj Station – see tunneling plan.

Meanwhile, TBM S52 (Gomti) has excavated and built 56 rings (1 ring=1.4m) out of an estimated 578 rings since it was commissioned on January 23 2017. In the above image, soil/muck can be seen being brought out from the tunnel.

Here’s a brilliant video of the Bapu Bhawan Shaft shot yesterday. In the top-left corner, the temporary rings built by TBM S52 are visible. Towards the right is the Sachivalaya (Secretariat) Station’s site.

And here’s a look at the under construction Charbagh Ramp, connecting package LKCC-01 with LKCC-06, through which trains in 2019 will enter and exit the tunnels:

Thanks for video. But kindly don’t upload videos unless someone from safety reviews them. I can see multiple safety breaches in that video and it does not reflect good on Indian metro industry, the contractor, clients representive or the client.
Seems lot of works need to be done to make the site factually safe. Numbers can always be fudged.
    Cheers

Hi, the video was uploaded by someone else and posted on Facebook. I’ve merely embedded it here. While it doesn’t reflect good on the companies involved, I hope it brings about some sort of change in practices?

        Sir/Madam

We are a group of 8 research students from IIT Dhanbad Mechanical Engineering dept. We are working on Tunnel Boring Machines: Failure and Reliability Analysis. Currently our work mainly depends on the already published research papers in the area of TBM.
It will be really helpful if we can get a chance to see the TBM working actually and have a first hand experience.
Kindly help us to get our chance to visit and see TBMs live working.

        Thanks
        Yours Truly
