Ahmedabad Metro’s 1st TBM Lowered into Apparel Park TBM Shaft

With soil excavation completed for the Apparel Park Shaft earlier this month, workers from Afcons Infrastructure today morning started lowering parts of S710 – the first ever tunnel boring machine of Ahmedabad Metro’s 20.737 km Line-1 on top of a cradle located on the shaft’s base-slab.

Parts of this refurbished Ø6.63m Herrenknecht TBM arrived in Ahmedabad on November 30 2017 after a 1840 km road journey from Chennai where Afcons Infrastructure used it to build three up-line tunnels over a distance of 4 km between Washermenpet and Central stations, with a final breakthrough taking place in February 2017.

In Ahmedabad, this earth pressure balance machine TBM  along with another new machine will be commissioned one after the other in the coming months for building 1.65 km twin tunnels as part of a Rs. 784.80 crore contract for the 2.446 km underground Package-1 (East Ramp – Kalupur) which got awarded by Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) in January 2017.
