3 Bidders for Chennai Metro Phase 1 Extension’s ISA Contract

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) today opened bids from firms specializing in testing, safety inspection and certification of metro rail systems to reveal that 3 firms have submitted bids for the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) contract of the 9.051 km Chennai Metro Phase 1 extension project which’ll extend the Blue Line from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar.

CMRL invited bids for this ISA contract in March 2020 under contract CMRL/ISA02/Mar 2020 and expects the appointed firm to be onboard for 9 months. This gives an extremely basic idea about when commercial services can be expected to start after the LOA is issued.

Bidders:

  • Aether Engineering Solutions
  • Bureau Veritas (India) Pvt. Ltd.
  • RINA Services S.P.A

Scope: CMRL invites bids from Independent Safety Assessors (ISAs) borne on the latest ISA panel for “ Metro Signalling Projects/Systems “of Research Designs & Standards Organization (RDSO) of Ministry of Railways ,Government of India, Lucknow-226011, for ISA services of the Signalling-Train Control System and its Safety-related interface to Rolling Stock and Platform Screen Doors Systems of Phase 1 Extension of the Project.

Chennai Metro’s Phase 1 extension project consists of a 2.4 km underground section and 6.6 elevated section, with 8 new stations at Sir Theagaraya College, Korrukupet, Tondiarpet, Toll Gate, Thangal, Gowri Ashram, Tiruvottiyur and Wimco Nagar:

The ISA contract for Chennai Metro’s 45.1 km Phase 1 project was awarded to Arthur D Little Limited in December 2011 with a contract valued at Rs. 3.33 crore.

After the ISA certifies the line’s systems, CMRL will then invite the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) to visit, inspect and certify the line fit for operations.

Track-work on the underground section was reportedly completed in February 2020 and CMRL was planning to run a diesel locomotive, like they typically first do, through the tunnels towards by end of February, but that plan never materialized.
