L&T Begins Work on Delhi-Meerut RRTS’ Package 7 and 17

2020 had another major update in store!

Larsen & Toubro on Wednesday performed a bhoomi puja and ground breaking ceremony in Meerut for two key packages of the 82.15 km Delhi – Meerut RRTS Line which were awarded by National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) in October-November 2020.

The two packages include:

Civil Package 7 – this roughly 12 km elevated package of the main-line with 5 stations consists of 2 disjointed parts on either side of Meerut city:

  1. Northern end of Shatabdi Nagar to Brahampuri DN Ramp with 1 station at Brahmapuri (approx 2 kms)
  2. Begumpul UP Ramp to Modipuram with 4 stations at MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut North and Modipuram (approx 10 kms)

Track-work Package 17 – includes the manufacturing, supply, installation, and commissioning of a ballast-less track system

Larsen & Toubro won Package 7’s work in November after placing the lowest bid of Rs. 723.35 crore beating four other firms. When piling work begins, it’ll become the Delhi – Meerut RRTS line’s fourth package where work has started, taking the under construction portion’s length to approximately 63 km out of 82.15 km.

Prior to winning Package 7, L&T won system Package 17’s ballastless track-work contract with a value of Rs. 648.46 crore, narrowly beating KEC – STS – VNC JV by just Rs. 6 lakh. Ballastless tracks were chosen by NCRTC based on PORR Bau’s recommendation for the following reasons:

  • Low maintenance requirements
  • Less dimension of track both depth and width (results in reduction of Tunnel Diameter)
  • Saving in elevated structure cost due to less weight
  • Maintenance of complex Geometric parameters of track
  • Increased service life
  • Make in India- Equal Opportunity for Indian contractors
