Afcons Launches Kanpur Metro Priority Corridor’s 300th U-Girder

Afcons Infrastructure on Saturday night celebrated the launch of their 300th U-girder for constructing the 8.728 km priority corridor of Kanpur Metro’s 23.785 km Line-1 between IIT Kanpur and Motijheel.

This is a significant milestone as the team’s scope involves erecting a total of 622 U-girders. The very first 25m U-girder weighing 147 MT was launched in August 2020, 100th in October (67 days since 1st), and 200th in December (63 days since 100th). For the next 100 U-girders, they took just 57 days – indicating an encouraging improvement in cadence between the General Consultant (TYPSA-Italferr JV) and Afcons’ casting & launch teams.

Afcons Infrastructure is rapidly building this section’s civil structure (viaduct & stations) through a Rs 734.56 crore contract for Package KNPCC-02R awarded in September 2019.

The 9 stations on Kanpur’s Priority Corridor are located on NH34 (GT Road) at IIT Kanpur, Kalyanpur Railway Station, SPM Hospital, CSJM Kanpur University, Gurudev Chauraha, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur Railway Station, Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital and Moti Jheel.

Meanwhile, roof-truss assembly works for the IIT-Kanpur Station is nearing completion (see snap).

In other news – financial bids for Kanpur and Agra metros’ telecommunications (Package KNPAGS-01) and head-hardened rails (Package KNPAGT-1) have been opened. If anyone reading this is aware of the winner for either – please leave a comment or drop me an email here.

Very good news. When do you think Kanpur Metro will be operational?

Sometime in Q1 2022? They’re aiming to start testing in November and operations in January.

Only minor speed-bump I see are for a couple tenders which were canceled in October and December (KNPAGT-4 for 1620 MT minor track-work and KNAG-05 for procuring re-railing rescue equipment). Retender notices are still pending, but I have a feeling UPMRC may no longer be pursuing their procurement.

With this rate, they will be done with all the U-girders by August 2021.
